He didn't know what was going on, police say. He pulled his black revolver and started shooting, emptying the gun at the fleeing vehicle. One bullet struck the car. It pierced the left tail light, entered the trunk, continued through the back seat and slammed into little Leonard Lockett's back. It exited out his stomach and lodged in the side of his 23-month-old cousin, Ashata Hall.

Both children were strapped in the back seat with a seat belt. Pompano Beach Officer Barry Whitfield responding to the original call was pulling up as the scene unfolded. He saw Sapp shooting at the disappearing car. "Ricky decided he couldn't catch it so he stopped and emptied his gun," said Sgt. John Boals.

"Why he decided the best way to help his niece was to shoot this car, I don't know." Sapp ran. Police found him a short time later hiding in a nearby carport. They recovered two guns, an empty revolver and a loaded .380 semi-automatic, in a nearby field. Meanwhile, Holland and her sis-tprs drove to a convenience store, about 12 blocks away. He believes there will be a vaccine against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, by the turn of the century. It may, however, have to be adrjii-nistered differently than other vaccines because HIV mutates easily. "I think it's likely that we'll haveo have different vaccines for different geographic areas, which is going make life complicated," Plotkin "It's not yet clear whether we can produce lasting immunity. I think there will be an HIV vaccine eventually, but I don't think it will enable us to do away with other forms of prevention." I' He expects vaccines for herpes and cytomegalovirus to come more quickly.

Darren Bt uao Forever in our Hearts HATTIE BLUM GOETZ May 10.1975 Oclober 15.1992 Knlght-Rldder Newspapers POMPANO BEACH, Fla. Ricky Lewis Sapp, fresh out of prison, wanted his inmate buddies to know how well he was faring on the outside. Hp wrote them a letter about the pleasures of freedom: chasing hookers and pulling hold-ups. He enclosed a snapshot: Shirtless and muscular, kneeling in front of a car, he held a .38 in his left hand, a .380 in his right. Yesterday, Sapp was back behind bars, charged in the random shooting death of a 3-year-old boy.

Sapp's relatives already had called Pompano Beach cops at 8:54 p.m. Wednesday because he had pulled a gun on one of his nieces. He took off. Moments after he ran out the door an old blue Futura packed with women and children pulled up in front of the house where Sapp had been living with relatives since his release from prison six weeks ago. Valerie Holland, 22, had come looking for her boyfriend, Sebbie "June" Lockett, the father of her four kids.

She knew Lockett was sneaking around with Jackie Thomas, Sapp's niece. Holland and Thomas, 18, got into a screaming match. Then Thomas yelled for her uncle who was disappearing down the street. Sapp turned around and came running back just as the car with Holland, her two sisters and four tiny kids pulled away. Sapp didn't know who was in the Knlght-Rldder Newspapers PHILADELPHIA If you think kids are vaccinated against a lot of diseases today, just wait till the 21st century.

Stanley Plotkin, a pediatrician who specializes in vaccine research, believes that by 2025, the average American will be vaccinated against about 30 diseases, including AIDS and genital herpes. People in developing countries could be protected against another 10. There will be vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza, two childhood respiratory diseases; for hepatitis and for chicken-pox; for Epstein-Barr virus, and for Lyme disease. That may sound like a lot of insurance for a lot of diseases that will never make most people very sick. But Plotkin says all those shots, or perhaps oral vaccines, will save society a lot of money in the long run.

The vaccines will prevent birth defects, deaths, thousands of visits to doctors or hospitals and countless hours of suffering and absence from work or school, he said. "From society's point of view, vaccines are extremely cost-effective," he said. "One of the ways of reducing medical costs is having vaccines." Plotkin was in Philadelphia yesterday to give a speech on vaccines of the future at the Wistar Institute. Now medical and scientific director for Pasteur Merieux Connaught, a French pharmaceutical company, he is a former faculty member at Wistar and at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. t..
