year of meditation and seclusion, a traditional Buddhist practice. Tendzin was raised in Passaic, N.J. After dropping out of Ford-ham University, he met the Venerable Chogyam Trungpa in 1971 and became the Tibetan Buddhist leader's top student. Trungpa gave him the name Osel Tendzin, or "radiant holder of the teachings." Vajradhatu was founded by Trungpa, who had fled the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibet to settle Boulder. Trungpa also founded the Naropa Institute, an accredited liberal arts college combining Eastern and Western studies.

When Trungpa named Tendzin his successor, it was the first time a Westerner had achieved such a position in Tibetan Buddhism. Trungpa died in 1987 at the age of 47. Vajradhatu's members include about 800 people in Boulder. It is a diverse group of mostly non-Asians who live "normal, family lives," said Rick Fields, who quit as editor of a Buddhist newspaper after organization leaders refused to let him publish information about Tendzin's illness. Hospital spokeswoman Julie Murray could not confirm his death, saying no one was registered under either name.

Tendzin in 1976 was designated his spiritual mentor's successor as leader of Vajradhatu, a Dharma-datu Buddhist community based in Boulder, Colo. In 1988, he disclosed he had AIDS. News reports at the time said the charismatic leader also acknowledged putting others at risk through his sexual behavior. The revelation divided the sect.
