Ashury Park Press Sunday, Jan. 14, 19 Hll SCHOLASTIC SCOREBOARD SCHOLASTIC Eagles' girls team shows its balance MONMOUTH COUNTY RELAYS Rallying: Lakewood's Mario Diaz (left) looks for back points in his 152-pound bout with Jackson's Andy Bigos. Diaz won 11-3, but the Piners suffered the loss. By BOB CONSIDINE STAFF WRITER LITTLE SILVER A couple of hours into the Monmouth County Relays at Red Bank Regional High School last night, the Middletown South girls track team was on its way to filling its gold medal closet for 1996. And, unlike many other teams in the Shore Conference, the Eagles' strengths lie in different areas the sprints, distance and everywhere in between.

"That's one of the best things about this job," said first-year coach Matt Imhof, who takes over an established Eagles team from Lou Mazzie. "I couldn't ask for a better situation to walk into. We have such spread-out talent and the girls are really into working for the team." South opened the relays with an easy win in the relay. Mary Beth McDonnell, Tara Cullen, Kara Simonetti and Cate Guiney took the top spot in 10:25.12, more than 10 seconds ahead of second-place St. John Vianney.

The Eagles won the 800-meter relay, with Rachel Sernitsky, Jenny O'Hagan, June Moore and Mary Schneider finishing in 1:52.79. South almost made it three in a row as June Moore, Sernitsky, O'Hagan and Suzanne Schild won the first heat of the sprint medley in 4:28.92. But Middletown North's Patty Storch, Stacey Nunziata, Laurie Dals-trom and Lisa Flood bettered that time by 0.68 seconds in the second heat and picked up the gold. The time 4:28.24 set a meet record. Still, the evening was a success for Imhof.

South is competing and winning in relays of all sizes.
