Van Sant, at 81, Freehold first aid volunteer partment as an inspector for 10 years until retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Wednesday Senior Citizens Bowling League, Wall. He was born in Jersey City and lived in Belmar since 1979. Surviving are his wife, Anna B.

Murphy Bucholz; two sons, John W. Bucholz and Gary Bucholz, both Belmar; two daughters, Donna N. Abbate, South Plainfield, and Debra McKelvey, Keyport; a sister, Dorothy Smith, Day-tona, and seven grandchildren. McCriskin Home for Funerals, South Plainfield, is in charge of arrangements. CARLING, 79, of Shadow Lake Village, MIDDLE-TOWN TOWNSHIP, died Friday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She was a medical secretary for 20 years for Dr. Norman D. Thet-ford in Eatontown. She was born in Brooklyn and lived in Fair Haven and Eatontown before moving to Middle-town 20 years ago.

Her husband, Leo J. Carling died in 1971. Surviving are two sons, Leon J. Carling III, with whom she lived, and James P. Carling, Florida; two daughters, Margaret A.

Ronan, New York, and Kathleen E. Carling, Titus-ville, and 12 grandchildren. Wor-den-Hoidal Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements. the first district council of the state first aid organization, served as chairman of the grievance commi-tee of the State Council and ws a former delegate to the County Health Council. He was chairman of the Safety Service Committee of the Ameri-.

can Red Cross in the Freehold area in 1949. Mr. Van Sant was a charter member of the Freehold Kiwa-nis Club, treasurer of the Wild Life Gun Club, Adelphia, Howell Town-'" ship, for 40 years, and an associate member of the Howell Township Fire Company 1, Adelphia. Mr. Van Sant was a lifelong resident of Freehold.

Surviving is his wife, the former Dorothy B. Bartron. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, is in charge of arrangements. ARTHUR D. VAN SANT, 81, of FREEHOLD, died yesterday at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township.

Mr. Van Sant was associated with his father, Richard Van Sant, in the operation of the former Van Sant Funeral Home on South Street in Freehold. Mr. Van Sant and his father also operated a private ambulance service in Freehold for 10 years before the Freehold First Aid Squad was established in 1941. When the Freehold First Aid Squad was formed with many members employed at the former Karagheusian Rug Mill, Mr.

Van Sant became a charter member of the squad. Mr. Van Sant served as captain of the squad in 1944. He served as a delegate to nham, De Land, and Daniel Ever-nham, Belford, Middletown; a sister, Matilda Flanagan, Port Monmouth, Middletown; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. WILLIAM A. STAATS 67, of NEPTUNE, died on Friday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was most recently employed as a security guard by Woodhaven Lumber Brick Township, for nine years. Prior to that, he was employed at Loizeaux Lumber Plainfield, for 35 years. He was a Navy World War II veteran and a member of the Elks Club, Dunel-len.

He was born in Plainfield and lived in South Plainfield before moving to Neptune 10 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Eileen Staats; two sons, William Staats South Plainfield, and Randee Staats, Dunellen; two daughters, Karen Seader and Debora Weaver, both Dunellen; his mother, Margaret Staats, and stepbrother, Gary Amodeo, both Neptune, and nine grandchildren. Jr. Belmar Wolfe, Edward M. Ocala, Fla. MARY BARAN ALLEN, 77, of MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP, died Friday at her daughter's home in Manalapan. She was an owner of Baran's Confectionary Store, Elizabeth, for 35 years until retiring in 1976.

She was a communicant of St. Peter and St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Elizabeth. She was born in Bayonne and lived in Elizabeth and LavaUette before moving to Manalapan 16 months ago. Her husband, Charles Allen, died in 1972.

Surviving are a daughter, Eileen Cyran, Manalapan, with whom she lived; two brothers, Stanley Baran, Lighthouse Point, and Edward Szymczak, Ortley Beach; two sisters, Bertha Muklevicz, San Diego, and Dorothy Pinto, Myrtle Beach, N.C, and three grandchildren. He was known as "Bucky," and owned and operated the former Bucky's Snack Bar in Jersey City for 20 years until 1969.

Mr. Lackett was a teacher, coordinator and head of the industrial arts department in the Edison Township school district where he worked for 33 years before his retirement last September. Mr. Lackett was a graduate of Trenton State College and received his master's degree from Kean College, Union Township.

He was a member of Edison Township Teachers Association, New Jersey Education Association, and the National Education Association. Mr. Lackett served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C.

Church, Freehold. He was one of daughter's home in New Port Richey, Fla. She was a member of the Highlands Methodist Church. She was born in the Highlands and was a lifelong Highlands resident. Her husband, Robert G.

WILLIAM C. FRANKLIN, 78, of MANASQUAN, died Thursday at Point Pleasant Hospital. He had been an electronic technician for the Sipal Corps Engineering Laboratory, Fort Monmouth, for approximately 20 years until retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Manasquan United Methodist Church, Manasquan. He was an exempt fireman, Engine Co.

2, Manasquan Fire Department, and an Army World War II veteran. He was born in Spring Lake and was a lifelong Manasquan resident. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Prevost Franklin, and a daughter, Sandra Joyce Frye, Hampton, Va. Robert C. Neary Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN J. GILLIGAN, 70, of BELMAR, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was employed as an investigator by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in New York and Newark for over 25 years until retiring in 1977. He was an Army World War II veteran, a 1949 Fordham University graduate and a member of the Manasquan Elks.

He was born in Jersey City where he lived before moving to Belmar three years ago. His wife, Marie Bligh Gilligan, died in 1989. Surviving are a brother, Michael Gilligan, Carteret; a sister, Kathleen Haas, Toms River, and a friend, Fleurita Carducci, Holmdel Township. JOHNSON, 96, of New Bern, N.C, formerly of HIGHLANDS, died Tuesday at the Twin Rivers Nursing Center, New Bern, N.C. She was the former director of welfare in Highlands. She was a member of the Red Bank Woman's Club and of the Riverview Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, C.

Mel Johnson, the former Highlands postmaster, predeceased her. Surviving are a son, Gran-din M. Johnson, New Bern; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Cotten Funeral Home New Bern, is in charge of arrangements. MAUREEN T.

KAMMERER, 44, of HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was a postal clerk for 12 years for the U.S. Postal Service, Eatontown. She was a communicant of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, and a member of the Eatontown Postal Bowling League, Monmouth Lanes.

She was born in Jersey City and lived in the Bronx until moving to Holmdel 17 years ago. Surviving are her husband, Richard W. Kammerer; a son, Kurt R. Kammerer, and a daughter, Dora E. Kammerer, all at home, and a brother, Christopher M.P.

RUSSELL COBLE, 94, of ASBURY PARK, died from a heart condition yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was a electrical contractor and had founded the Coble Electric, Ocean Township, in 1932 and had operated that business until retiring in 1980.

Prior to that he had worked for the National Cash Register Co. in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Coble was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Asbury Park and had been a member of its official board. He was a life member of the Asbury Masonic Lodge 142, the Salaam Temple, Newark, and the Ancient Accepted Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Valley of Jersey City.

He was a past vice president of the National Electrical Contractor's Association. Mr. Coble was a member of the Photographic Society of America and was a charter member of the Shore Camera Club. Mr. Coble had been recognized nationally and internationally for his monochromic prints.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred M. Opdyke; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Grasser and Janet C. Be-ringer, both Ocean Township; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ocean Grove Memorial Home, Ocean Grove, is in charge of arrangements.

He was a carpenter for M. Karagheu-sian Rug Mill, Freehold, for 25 years and worked as an orchard foreman for Guinco Farms, Freehold Township, for many years. He was a communicant of St. Denis R.C. Church, Manasquan.

He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous for 25 years and was past president of the Manalapan Fire Company. He was born in Czechoslovakia; he lived in Manalapan Township before moving to Wall in 1985. Surviving are his wife, Laura J. Ginko Macho; one son, Emil Macho, Howell Township; two daughters, Frances M. Pilot, with whom he lived, and Barbara Ann Magda, Union Beach; a sister, Rose Joanson, South Amboy; five grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Woodward Norman; a son, Vincent M. Norman, Freehold; a daughter, Jeanne Norman, Howell Township; two sisters, Alice Linke, Ridley Park, and Hanna Burlew, Old Bridge; two grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren. YVONNE M. PYLE, 75, of Lake Worth, formerly of MANASQUAN, died Tuesday. She was a volunteer at St. Michael's Episcopal Church of Glendola. She was born in Atlantic City and lived in Manasquan before moving to Lake Worth in 1982.

Her husband, Leonard J. Pyle, predeceased her. Surviving are a son, Leonard R. Pyle, Marion, two daughters, Norma J. Kenny, Brielle, and Christina R.

LAVINIA SMITH, 88, of Navesink, MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, died Friday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was born in Toms River and lived in Oxford, N.Y., and Atlantic Highlands before moving to Navesink in 1988.

Her husband, Harvey Smith, died in 1956 and her son, Scott Smith, died in 1990. Surviving is a son, William H. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Bloomfield for 26 years until retiring in 1976. He was born in Bloomfield and lived in East Orange and Mont-clair before moving to Port Monmouth, Middletown, in 1976.
