Lehigh University senior Mary Oli-verie, a center fielder on the softball team, knocked in a game-tying run with an RBI walk and helped Lehigh sweep a doubleheader from Long Island University. Maybe in the next couple of years it will pick up. There are just not a lot of schools around here inter-tested, but this is a step in the right direction.

The kids here go to different schools and bring what they learn back to their schools. "My goal is to play in college. But schools can't look at you so you have to be a walk-on." "I guess what our club is trying to do is to encourage the expansion of the youth league concept," said Hellenack. "Right now, we're concentrating on the Middletown and Red Bank area. That's the way to encourage growth, making clubs and getting the kids exposed to it.

The whole reason for any Notes CONTINUED FROM PAGE 36 contact athletic director Jack Levy (908)222-9300. Ed Beams, a 1951 graduate of lack of interest is that kids have not been exposed to it." The signs are encouraging that interest is growing at two schools in particular, CBA and Middletown South. According to Hellenack, CBA has six kids playing for the Hammerheads, two more playing for Metedeconk (a new lacrosse club in Brick Township), and six other students that played at Rumson Country Day that are not playing, more than enough to field a team. Middletown South has at least 10 players on the Hammerheads' roster, among them All-Shore football player Keith Stopera, introduced to the sport by his brother Kevin, who joined the Hammerheads last year. "Right now, it's in limbo because we haven't made presentations," said Hellenack of planned efforts to talk to schools about implementing lacrosse.

"One thing the club is going to do is talk with CBA. The irony is it doesn't take kids away from baseball like ev Freehold High School, who coached in West Virginia schools for 24 years, will be honored posthumously at the Coaches All-Star Football Classic XI in Cumberland, W.Va. Two retired football coaches, one from Maryland and one from West Virginia, are selected to be honored by the East-West Panhandle Coaches As- erybody fears. You go after football players. For coaches on Long Island and in upstate New York and Maryland, this is a way keep their football players in shape.

"CBA has a hockey team. In Canada, though hockey is more popular, lacrosse is a national sport. In the offseason, they play lacrosse. Look at the teams CBA plays in hockey. Montclair, St.

Joe's Metuchen, they have lacrosse. "The sore spot with ADs is that you have to travel," added Hellenack. "But in New Jersey, you're not more than an hour away from anything. Princeton is an hour away and there are nine schools there that play. Plus you have Admiral Farragut (Pine Beach), Edison, Old Bridge.

Right now there are 60 schools, out of 440, that have lacrosse in New Jersey."
