077 1 MOSCOW, May 19, 1935 The World's largest land plane, the Maxim Gorky, collided with an escorting plane, broke in mid-air and crashed to the ground, killing 49 persons in the worst disaster ever to befall a passenger plane. The wreckage of the two planes fell ever the village of Socol, on the outskirts of Moscow, crushing at least one house. Reports that several villagers died couldn't be confirmed. Blame for the tragedy was fixed by Soviet officials on the pilot of the small escorting plane. Nikolai Blagin, whose plane rammed head-long into the leading edge of the giant Maxim Gorky's wing while he was stunting in violation of orders.

Blagin died along with all 48 occupants of the mamouth passenger jSJane. The huge aircraft carried a crew of ideven. The dead passengers included a chief production engineer of the Aerodynamic Institute and the director of the institute's pilot committee and his two jhildrcn. Damage was estimated at $125,000. May 21 Dr. Daniel Bergsma, New Jersey health commissioner advised lo include being named Sixth-Grade Student of the Year. Meanwhile, an optimistic President Johnson called for the first withdrawal of American troops. Diplomats were also hopeful due to the fact that the military situation had developed into a standoff between junta military forces and Dominican Rebels.
