ASBURY PARK PRESS, Sun. Aug. 21, 1977 G17 14 Preschoolers Get Head Start WhatDo- Enrollment Still Open At Monmouth College You Think KEANSBURG Some pre-kindergarten students here are getting a head start this summer for their first classroom experience. By the time the first school bell rings in the fall, 14 students will already have their own individualized lesson plan. They are children who have been identified as having hearing, visual or orthopedic impairments, or perceptual or behavioral problems, and they are in school for four weeks this summer to get a head start.

Dr. Robert Singer, school psychologist, and Carol Freedman, school learning disabilities consultant, developed the program this year for federal Title 6 money in the amount of $8,250. "We felt the need to locate and help the children before they get Into school. Currently, students are already in school and they are referred to a special education program by the homeroom teacher. Sometimes they are retained and do not advance Before school closed for the summer fourth-graders at the Green Grove School In Neptune were asked to write their responses to the following question: "Do you think violence on TV makes people who watch it more violent toward each other?" to the next grade," Mrs.

Freedman said. "This way, we are getting to them first and when they go into school in the fall they will have their own individualized program prepared for the regular kindergarten class." Dr. Singer explained that brief interviews were conducted with children when they registered last spring for kindergarten. Some were also referred to Dr. Singer from the Title I preschool program and recreation centers.

After initial interviews, about 23 children were further screened. A medical examination and interviews with parents on the child's developmental history were also conducted. The school social worker and physician were involved in the screening. Fourteen children were eventually selected for the program, which started in July. During the two and one- half hour classes the length of a regular kindergarten class the students work on large and small muscle coordination, perceptual and conceptual games.

A speech-language specialist is also available. A supplemental learning program meeting the student's individual needs will be developed in time for their enrollment next year in a regular kindergarten class. "Some parents have been relieved and thrilled. Previously, there might have been a problem but no one knew exactly what it was. And others have denied there is a problem, by saying 'He's Mrs.

Freedmam said. "This provides a head-start for handicapped kids," Dr. Singer said. "Over the years we have noticed that when they started kindergarten here there is a high proportion of children with special needs. And this program helps meet their needs earlier." period; a variety of interdisciplinary studies (new in this category is a program combining art and psychology as fields of major interest); pre-professional programs in law, medicine, and dentistry; a medical technology program; biology-health for RNs; certificate programs in computer science, and peace studies; internships in accounting, anthropology, and political science; and field study in psychology, social work, and special education.
