LONG BRANCH REPORTER ASBURY PARK PRESS PAGE 5 West End antique store owners living the 'Hy life THURSDAY, MARCH 20. 2003 4 i ZJ ft' tiki i I wt i am i-V -if tit i '-n. Mi Ja. is i'f i i BYVINCE MILLER Staff Writer Judy Feinstein has been a mother, aviatrix, restaurateur, caterer and antiques shop owner in that order. And if her background isn't interesting enough, consider that of her daughter.

Susan Tuscano has been a special education teacher, a social worker and since has authored 14 books on psychology and self help. All of that, of course, makes for interesting conversation as one peruses the variety of furni- ture and an- LONG BRANCH tiques at their hmb Hy Spot Antiques and Interiors shop, 61 Brighton Ave. in the West End district of Long Branch. Feinstein's interesting career began when her son, Jerry, and daughters Susan and Lori, were in school. She said she just happened to visit a private airport in the mid-1960s and noticed several women pilots.

The idea occurred to her that she could do likewise, and so began her love affair with aviation. She flew single- and multiple-engine planes and was a founder of the Garden State Chapter of the "99s," the international organization of women pilots. Feinstein left active flying in 1977 and entered the restaurant business in Paoli, with her son. They named their restaurant Lanky's after Jerry's rangy frame and its location, Lancaster Avenue. The restaurant became a local favorite for chief chef Feinstein's cooking, and later expanded into the catering business.

Hy's carries antiques, but "most of the older stock doesn't fit the strict definition of being 100 years old," Tuscano said. To underscore that, she pointed to an attractive 50-year-old vanity set which most would consider an antique.

"Everything we have is one or two of a kind," Tuscano said. "If someone comes in and asks us to find a specific item, we may try to find it, but it may take some time." Code." She calls it "your personal prescription for a longer, happier life." Mother and daughter pride themselves on service.

"We are a store, but we also serve," Feinstein said. "If you've bought a bed, we'll help you set it up; a chair, we'll upholster it, a chandelier, we'll rewire it." The main and basement floors are filled with headboards and footboards, chandeliers, lamps, mirrors, paintings, tables, sofas and love seats. Feinstein, who calls herself "the queen of beds," said the proprietors own all stock. "There is nothing consigned here," she said. Feinstein fell in love with the Elberon area during summer visits and eventually settled there for what she thought would be retirement. But it was while husband Hy was working in the thrift shop of the Jewish Family and Children's Services that the couple decided to open the shop that bears his name.

More than 147,000 New Jersey seniors ages 65 and older still work, according to the 2002 census 10,946 live in Monmouth County. In a Business Week reader survey conducted last year, more than 500 of the 750 respondents still were working at their regular jobs.

Two-thirds of those who an- REGI0N swered the aMH survey said they planned to work after retirement to stay challenged and stimulated. And more than one-third of the active workers said they'll continue to work at one job or another because they'll need the money. But Soehngen, 59, said he'll work after he retires at the age of 62, not because he has to, but because he wants to. "I realized I can't abruptly stop working because work is still fun for me," he said. He's already double-dipping, working full time as a pharmaceuticals sales representative while revving the engine of his new business as a Broadway play tour guide.

"Broadway Ray," as Soehngen calls himself, also is the name of his business in which he charters buses to New York and offers residents from surrounding towns a theater ticket and transportation for about $100. He currently averages about 10 to 12 bus trips per year, a number that might increase upon his retirement three years from now. Soehngen said he's not financially obligated to continue working. "I've been very successful in my real job," he said. "Pharmaceuticals pays pretty well." He said retirement offers people the time to experiment with prospects they haven't been able to pursue earlier because of their full-time jobs.

"A lot of people are waiting to retire to do things they haven't done before," he said. "Why wouldn't you do something that you do best," he asked. "I know Broadway. I know theater."
