(AP) Country music star Tex Ritter died last night of a heart attack while visiting a friend at the county jail, police said. Ritter singer, guitar-player, actor and politician was 67. Davidson County Sheriff Fate Thomas said Ritter was stricken while visting a friend who had been jailed for nonpayment of alimony.

Police administered oxygen and rushed Ritter to Baptist Hospital, where he died, Thomas said. Hospital officials said Ritter suffered a massive coronary and died in the emergency room at 7 p.m. Ritter's hit records included: "High Noon," "Boll Weevil," "Wayward Wind," "Hillbilly Heaven" and "You Are My Sunshine." Ritter starred in 78 movies in his 12-year Hollywood career and appeared in television Westerns, such as "The Rebel" and "Zane Gray Theater." But he won most of his awards in the country music field, and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1964. Ritter, a transplanted Texan who lived in Nashville, was a familiar sight in both political and musical circles with his big smile and 10-gallon hat. His career began in the 1930s with radio shows.

Later in the decade, Hollywood beckoned. 'By the 1950s he had appeared in more than 50 Westerns for Monogram, Columbia and Universal. In 1970 Ritter sought the U.S. Senate scat of Democrat Albert Gore, but was defeated in the Tennessee Republican primary by Rep. Bill Brock.

Only three weeks ago, the country and western entertainer went to Washington to present President Nixon with a special recording. There were only two copies of the album, which was composed of Nixon's speeches with narration by Ritter. The second copy was given to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
