INGMAR BERGMAN may be the internationally acclaimed genius of cinema, but he is not above making some drastic changes in a project to fit commercial needs if he thinks those needs justified. He has been working on finding a way to make possible the theatrical showing of his TV film "Scenes from a Marriage." starring Liv Ullmann.

The latest is that film distributor Donald Rugoff will open the Bergman work in New York on September 15. and there is a story behind the decision. The famed director originally did six segments for Swedish television covering the problems and disintegration of a marriage. Rugoff bought the property for Cinema distribution, and Bergman cut it down to four hours But that's still a long time to sit. So a plan was worked out to open the film in a split version, showing the first half for one run, and then later opening the second half.

But that is cumbersome, as was shown by the attempt to present "War and Peace" that way. Now Bergman is editing the footage down to two hours and 45 minutes, and it will be shown in one sitting at Cinema and in other theaters throughout the country. The picture is a major tour de force for Liv Ullmann, already garnering accolades as one of the most talented actresses working today Television star FREDDIE PRINZE, who opens in a new NBC series, "Chico and the Man," this fall, came back to New York to visit his childhood haunts. Call todayl The same kind of act for which Lenny Bruce was busted on obscenity charges in New York is taking place off -Broadway at the Players Theater. 115 MacDougal Street.

Only now it is being presented by actor FRANK SPEISER, impersonating the late comedian in "The World of Lenny Bruce." Speiser has the Bruce material down pat, and does more than half the show as a stand-up comedy routine. Then he goes into a swift, emotionally-charged change of pace as Bruce awaiting an appeals hearing and sinking deeper into desperation Under today's standards the material hardly causes a ripple, but Bruce was closed down in one city after another. There'll be a rare occasion to see him in a night club setting July 29-Aug 3, when he takes over at the St. Regis Roof He'll have nine musicians under his direction ROGER MARTIN, formerly with Restaurant Associates, has his own spot now, with excellent results. Roger's, at 324 E. 57th Street, is but a few avenue blocks from the Fifth Avenue shopping area, and closer to the Bloomingdale's neighborhood.

The setting is handsome, with tables arranged spaciously, waiters who try hard to please, and a menu that reflects an effort to provide originality. An appetizer of shrimps and artichokes with a tangy sauce is very special. Each night there is "the catch of the day" of fresh fish Beef dishes are offered with assorted sauces Fresh peaches or strawberries in wine, or special Roger's cheesecake are dessert attractions. The restaurant tends to draw a chic crowd. In general, one finds an over-all ambiance of caring that the diner has a good time.
