Chebotayev, who directed one of the largest institutes for atomic physics studies, in the western Siberian city of Novosibirsk, is credited with at least half a dozen important discoveries in atomic physics, Franken said. Among them was the invention of two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy, which Franken termed "an epical advance in precision measurement techniques of atomic structure." Chebotayev's wife, Tanya, was in Munich, Germany, where the couple had been staying while Chebotayev was on a sabbatical at the Max Planck Institute, Franken said. Their daughter, Marina, is on the faculty of the University of Connecticut, and Chebotayev also had been doing research at Yale University, Franken said. Among the awards Chebotayev received was the Lenin Prize for science in 1978 and the Townes Prize, presented by the Optical Society of America, in 1984. The Associated Press TUCSON, Ariz.

Viennamin Chebotayev, one of the world's leading atomic physicists, died while on a visit from Russia, University of Arizona officials said yesterday. Chebotayev, 53, a winner of the Lenin Prize for science and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the former Soviet Academy of Sciences, was discovered dead in bed about 8 a.m., said Peter Franken, his host and friend. Authorities were conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but Franken said he found Chebotayev clutching his chest and it appeared to be "a classic coronary." Chebotayev had been scheduled to speak today at a university seminar and was discussing joining the university's Optical Sciences Center, said the center's new director, Richard Powell on the job himself for the first day. Franken, a member of the optical sciences faculty, called Chebotayev "one of the 10 most prominent atomic scientists in the world today." Powell called Chebotayev one of the world's most famous scientists FLEMING Rosanne. 65.
