PRESS STAFF REPORT CHALK ONE up for the Howell girls basketball team. The Rebels, behind 13-point efforts from junior Amber Ortiz and senior Meagan Barnes, captured the school's first-ever girls Freehold Regional Holiday Tournament championship yesterday with a 44-43 win over Madison Central at Manalapan High School. In the boys final, Manalapan fell to Ridgewood, 69-59. It was the Braves' third consecutive appearance in the tournament's final after winning championships in 1989 and 1990. Howell (3-2), built a 28-16 lead at the half and hung on tight in the second half to hand the Spartans their first loss of the season.

"It was a great feeling," said Howell coach Bob Harrigan, in his 11th season at the helm. "It's nice, a real pleasant surprise." Madison Central (3-1), after taking a 40-38 lead with about two minutes to play, saw the Rebels respond with baskets by Ortiz, the tournament's most valuable player, and Barnes to go up for good, 42-40, with about a minu-te-and-a-half to play. "After our opening-day game (a loss CLASSIC: Despite a great effort by se- nior Keith Kurowski, CBA fell in the final to host St. Joseph's of TrumbulT 63-51. Kurowski pumped in a game-high-33 points and was named the tourna ment MVP.

He scored a total of 91 1 points in the three-game event, one point shy of the tournament record. St. Joe's, led by Charles Clemon (25 points) and Mike Donnelly (15 points), took a 21-11 lead into the sec-. ond quarter and held on the rest of the i way. CBA sophomore Steve Strocki was named to the all-tournament team.

POINT BORO BOYS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT: Terry Kenney scored a game-high 12 points and CJ. Rott added 11-to lead Point Boro to the tournament title with a 47-31 victory over Pine-1 lands. The Panthers held a 31-23 after the third quarter. In the Point Boro pulled away on strength of 12 of 15 shooting from the.i free throw line. Kenney scored eight second-half points while Chris Lemor.e -scored all six of his points in the sec- ond half.

Kevin McCullough and Hatcher scored 10 points apiece foe Pinelands. to Wall), where we did not play well, I had reservations (about doing well in the tournament)," Harrigan said. "But after our win over Freehold in the opening round of the tournament, I got a feeling that we could really play well." Madison Central was led by Simone Weems (13 points), Leslie Miller (13) and Barbara Weischadle (12). Howell's Shannon Cologe (six points), Ortiz, Barnes and the Spartans' Weems and Weischadle were each named to the all-tournament team. On the boys' side, the Braves (2-2) were led by Jack Perri's 26 points, but never regained the lead after falling behind early in the first quarter.

Ridgewood pulled away in the second quarter getting eight points each from Will Geist, Mike Callaghan and tournament MVP Joe Pedone and assumed a 43-31 half time lead. Perri, Geist, Callaghan and Pedone were joined on the all-tournament team by Miles Macik of Marlboro. NORTHEAST CATHOLIC BASKETBALL nament. I think we rode an emotional high from the RBC game into this game. It also helped being in our gym.

"I see a Neptune team that has improved tremendously since a week ago," said Lakewood coach John Richardson. The performance by Justice was even more impressive considering the fact that he had Lakewood's 6-11 center Chad Glenn (15 points) to contend with. But Justice was not alone underneath. Junior forward DeWayne Stewart also came up big, grabbing eight rebounds to go along with 14 points. "You always feel pressure before the game," said Justice.

"But after the opening tipoff you just play the game and do the best you can. We saw physically that we could get with them. All we did was stick to our game plan and box them out. My teammates made it easy. "DeWayne Stewart also did an excellent job down there.

I couldn't have done it without him." After an 11-11 first quarter, Robin son keyed a 12-6 Neptune advantage in the second quarter. His three(i pointer with 1:23 left in the half him six points in the quarter and gave." Neptune a 23-15 lead. Neptune maintained its throughout the third quarter, and Robinson's second three-pointer gave the Fliers a 36-25 lead with 2:38 left, be fore Lakewood's Monte Butler, who -1 had 10 points, pulled the Piners within nine with a steal and breakaway, layup. Butler keyed a 7-2 run by Lakewood to open the fourth quarter with a pair of steals, leading to four points. But a spinning layup in the lane by Robinson' and a pair of free throws by Stewarf -preceded Justice's slam dunk.

Justice' 'y followed with another score to cap an 8-0 run and give the Fliers a lead with just under three minutes left Glenn and Butler joined Justice and Robinson on the all-tournament team, along with Tom McAllister Neptune From page Dl Just a week ago, Neptune, which starts two sophomores and two juniors, was 0-2 and looking like a rebuilding project. But the young Fliers have turned a slow start into a great beginning for first-year coach Ken O'Donnell. Justice, who averaged 13.3 points and over 10 rebounds in the has led the way. After beating Long Branch in the opening round, 64-32, the Fliers won a gut-wrenching overtime game vs. Red Bank Catholic, 58-57, in the semifinals Saturday.

"For my first year, this is just a great beginning," said O'Donnell. "We were 0-2 and this is a tough tournament. We played a Long Branch team that is young, but then we had to beat RBC and Lakewood. We had to mature quickly to be competitive in this tour RBC. McAllister, who averaged 22.5, points in the tournament, scored 17p points as the Caseys beat St.
