CS Asbury Park Press Thursday, October 3. 1991 Obituaries o-'i -'if Leona Landon, at 69, teacher in Toms River Charles Norton Coe, at 76, ex-Monmouth College official operettas and Broadway plays. She was a graduate of Glassboro State College. Miss Landon was born in Philadelphia and lived in Vineland before moving to Toms River in 1950. Surviving are two aunts, Kather-ine Landon and Harriet Jackson, both of Scranton, and several cousins.

Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements. TOMS RIVER Leona Landon, 69, died Tuesday at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was a teacher and began her teaching career in Vineland. She taught in various schools and taught in Toms River School system for 30 years, before retiring in 1984. She directed summer drama programs for both elementary and high school students for many years and she will be remembered for numerous Gilbert and Sullivan Patriarch Dimitrios led Eastern Orthodox church sworth and the Literature of Travel," "Shakespeare's Villains," and "Demi-Devils: The Character of Shakespeare's Villains." He was a member of Christ Church, Shrewsbury; a member of the National and the New Jersey Education Associations, the Modern Language Association, the National Council of English Teachers and the College English Association.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and belonged to the Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Phi Omega, Phi Kappa Psi, and Phi Delta Kappa fraternities. Dr. Coe was born in Rahway and lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Idaho, and Illinois before moving to Tinton Falls in 1964. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth B. Brown Coe; a son, Timothy Phoenix, a daughter, Dory Coe, Brooklyn; a brother, Maxwell Sarasota, and one grandson.

Worden-Hoidal Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements. TINTON FALLS Charles Norton Coe, a former provost and vice president at Monmouth College, died Monday at Riverview Extended Care Center, Red Bank, of Parkinson's disease. He was 76. Dr. Coe joined Monmouth College, West Long Branch, as provost in 1964, and was named vice president of academic affairs in 1966.

In 1973 he became dean of the graduate studies department, and served in that capacity until 1977. During his tenure at Monmouth College, he was also a professor of English and was granted professor emeritus 1978 photo COE status upon his retirement in 1980. She was a bookbinding machine operator for Sidmar Clothing Brooklyn. Mrs.

Beloussow was born in Novocherkask, Russia, and lived in Brooklyn and in Queens for 18 years before moving to Hawthorne two months ago. Surviving are a daughter, Eugenie Dooling, Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and two grandchildren. Lakewood Funeral Home, Howell Township, is in charge of arrangements. BORUCH BRANDENBURG, 81, of LAKEWOOD, died yesterday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was a poultry farmer and egg dealer before starting his own construction business in Lakewood, which he operated for 15 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel, Lakewood. Mr. Brandenburg was born in Poland and lived in New York before moving to Lake-wood 38 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Rita Troppe Brandenburg; a son, Dan, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Esther Spokojny, Tel Aviv, Israel, and three grandchildren. Belkoff Jewish Memorial Chapel, Lake-wood, is in charge of arrangements.

J.R. BURDGE, 12, of LAKE-WOOD, died Tuesday at home after a long illness. He was a student at the Southard School, Howell Township. J.R. was born in Neptune and lived most of his life in Howell before moving to Lakewood in July.

Surviving are his father, James R. Burdge, Ocean Grove; his mother, Edna Vanessa Burdge, with whom he lived; a brother, Kyle Christopher Jackson Township; a sister, Cristal Lynn Burdge, Lakewood; his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Florence Burdge, New Port Richey, and his maternal grandfather, Anthony Ammirato, Manasquan. Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, is in charge of arrangements. JOSEPH M. GRABER 76, of Vincentown, Southampton Township, Burlington County, formerly of SHIP BOTTOM, died yesterday at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahaw-kin, Stafford Township.

He was employed by the Asten Hill Manufacturing Philadelphia, for 30 years, retiring in 1973. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Brant Beach, Long Beach Township. Mr. Graber was born in Camden and lived in Ship Bottom before moving to Vincentown in 1991.

His wife, Elizabeth died in 1989, and his son, Robert died in 1990. Surviving are two sons, Joseph M. ISTANBUL, Turkey Patriarch Dimitrios spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Eastern Orthodox Christians and a champion of Christian unity, died yesterday of a heart attack, his doctor said. The 77-year-old primate, installed in 1972, held the title Archbishop of Constantinople and was known as "primus inter pares" of the five senior Eastern Christian leaders, Latin for "first among 3 ft At DIMITRIOS I equals. Based in the city now known as Istanbul, he was the spiritual guide of worldwide Orthodoxy, which is divided into 14 churches of many ethnic groups, including Albanians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Greeks, Serbians, Romanians and for 32 years, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Mr. Fornino was born in Sassano, Italy, and came to the United States as an infant, and was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. His wife, Catherine Caruso Fornino, died in 1970. Surviving are a son, John Eatontown; a daughter, Dolores Kennedy, Middletown Township; two sisters, Mary Ciccone and Carmella Mundel, both of Long Branch; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces.

Hoffman Funeral Home, Long Branch, is in charge of arrangements. ELEANOR C. HOFFMANN, 83, of FREEHOLD, died Tuesday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. Mrs. Hoffmann was born in Elizabeth and lived in Toms River and Whiting, Manchester Township, before moving to Freehold in 1989.

Her husband, William, died in 1981. Russians. Six million followers of Eastern Orthodoxy live in the United States. Archbishop Iakovos, head of the 2 million-member Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, said in a statement issued by a spokesman in New York: "The clergy and the people of our archdiocese are in deep mourning as we hear the news of the untimely death of our patriarch, who was our spiritual support with his personal virtue and his Christian nobility." Although the patriarch holds little power over the independent Orthodox churches, which share a common faith and sacraments, his influence remains strong among them. The patriarch's successor is chosen by the Holy Synod, made of leading churchmen, which must submit his name to the Turkish government for approval.

Turkey requires the patriarch to be a Turkish citizen. The Associated Press Surviving are a son, Ronald, Freehold; seven grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren. Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, Whiting, is in charge of arrangements. VERA VAUGHAN ORSO, 76, of LITTLE SILVER, died yesterday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was a budget technician at Fort Monmouth for 20 years, retiring in 1976.

Mrs. Orso was born in New York and lived in Shrewsbury before moving to Little Silver in 1949. Her first husband, William T. Vaughan, died in 1983. Surviving are her husband, Camillo two sons, Robert C.

Garrison was president of the National Urban League between 1947 and 1952 and was active in civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union. He was president of the New York City board of education in the mid-1960s, taught law at New York University and, as a member of the Democratic Party Central Committee, helped lead a reform movement that ousted Tammany Hall politico Carmine De-Sapio as party leader in New York County. The Associated Press Surviving are his wife, Helen T. Ne-methy Sharkey, and four sons, Kevin, Merritt Island, Dennis, Toms River; Vincent, San Francisco, and Thomas, Mount Vernon, Va. JOHN FORNINO 84, of LONG BRANCH, died Tuesday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was a flagman for Conrail INTRODUCING NJ TRANSIT'S degree cum laude from Amherst College, Amherst, in 1937, a master's degree from Trinity College in 1940, a second master's degree from Yale University in 1943 and a doctorate from Yale in 1950. Dr. Coe began his teaching career as an instructor of English and Latin at Williston Academy in East Hampton, Mass. From 1939 to 1947 he was an assistant professor at Trinity College in Hartford, before becoming headmaster at the Williston Junior School in East Hampton.

In 1948 he became an English professor at the University of Idaho before being named head of its humanities department in 1954. He moved on to Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, 111., as a professor of English and dean of the graduate school, where he remained until joining to Monmouth College. He wrote three books: "Word War obtained a Harvard University law degree in 1922 and spent his life in a mixture of public service and private practice. As the great-grandson of William Lloyd Garrison, a major figure in the anti-slavery movement prior to the Civil War, he carried that family tradition over into his own career. In the 1950s, Garrison represented several prominent Americans accused of Communist sympathies poet Langston Hughes in the Senate hearings of Sen.

Joseph McCarthy; playwright Arthur Miller before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and nuclear sci was also an exempt member of the Brick Fire Association, Brick. Mr. Lindsay was born in Teaneck Township and lived in Fair Lawn before moving to Brick 28 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Baker Lindsay; two sons, Robert Brick, and William, Montclair; three stepsons, Michael Conrady, Fullerton, Matthew Conrady, Buena Park, and Mitchell, Virginia Beach, and eight grandchildren. EDWARD L. ROBB 81, of New Egypt, PLUMSTED TOWNSHIP, died Monday at home. He was a supervisor for Western Electric, Kearny, for 43 years before retiring. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mr.

Robb was born in Jersey City and lived in North Arlington and in Toms River for 10 years before moving to New Egypt three years ago. His wife, Margaret Graham Robb, died in February. Surviving are two sons, Edward L. California, and Richard, New Egypt; three sisters, Etta Ackermann, Allentown; Marie Siever, Conroe, Texas, and Margaret Wilson, Flagstaff, and six grandchildren. ALICE SCHILLER, 84, of Cedar Glen Lakes, Whiting, MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, died Tuesday at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was a secretary for the Long Island Trust Long Island, for three years, retiring in 1954. She was a member of the Fellowship Dea-conry, Liberty Corner, the Liberty Corner Mission, and she attended the Whiting Bible Church, Whiting. Mrs. Schiller was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1949, and lived in Port Washington, Long Island, before moving to Whiting in 1974.

Her husband, Richard, died in 1986. Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Miller, Brevard, N.C.; Eleanor West, Bayville, Long Island, and Winifred Goldberg, Hawaii; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was a contract agent for the Department of Defense at ITT, Clifton, for 37 years, retiring in 1974. He served in the Army during World War II; was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Council 4969, and the Father Graham Anchor Club, both of Toms River. He was a graduate of St. Benedict Preparatory School, Newark, and received his bachelor's degree in 1933 from St.

Garrison, the great-grandson of a famed Civil War era abolitionist and a noted civil rights lawyer, died at age 92 yesterday. Garrison's death, from heart failure, was announced by the Manhattan law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton Garrison, where he had been a name partner since shortly after World War II. Garrison not only carved out his own niche as a noted civil rights lawyer but also as a Democratic party reform leader. Born in New York in 1897, Garrison served in the Navy in World Vincentown, and John Manahaw-kin; two daughters, Ann Dructor, Spring House, and Martha Kremer, Warren Grove, Stafford, and one grandchild. DONALD V. HUEY, of POINT PLEASANT, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was director of refueling services with Butler Aviation, Newark, for many years, retiring 10 years ago. Mr. Huey was born in Elizabeth and lived in Roselle before moving to Point Pleasant in 1951.

His wife, Dorothy Payne, died in 1983. Surviving are two sons, Donald Jackson Township, and Glenn Point Pleasant; two daughters, Lo-rinda Arpin, Point Pleasant, and Dorothy M. Kissam, Brick Township; two brothers, Edward, Florida, and Chester, Roselle Park; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. LINDSAY 82, of BRICK TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at Brick Hospital, Brick. He was employed at the body shop at Ford Motor Rahway, for 32 years, and retired as a supervisor in 1966.
