Jaeckel's aid as he was pinned underwater by a fallen tree. The film, directed by Newman and also starring Henry Fonda, was based on a novel by Ken Kesey about a family of loggers carving a living out of the Oregon woods. In 1991 and 1992, Mr. Jaeckel regularly appeared on the syndicated TV series "Baywatch" as Lt Ben Edwards, a grizzled veteran who coordinated rescue activity. He also starred as Lt.

Martin Quirk from 1985 to 1987 on the ABC-TV detective series "Spenser: For Hire," starring Robert Urich. Mr. Jaeckel appeared in "The Gunfighter" (1950), "Battleground" (1949), "Come Back, Little Sheba" (1952), "Platinum High School" (1960) "Town Without Pity" (1961) "Once Before I Die" (1965), and "The Green Slime" (1969). Known as "Billy," Mr. Black co-owned Conner's Hotel and Beach Club in Highlands along with his brothers. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman -Catholic Church, Highlands, and a tWorld War II Army veteran. Born in Highlands, he was a lifelong Bayshore resident. His wife, Marjorie "Pudgie" Black, bdied in 1991.

Surviving are two brothers, Herman "Duke" and John "Jack," -both of Highlands. John P. Condon Funeral Home, Middletown, is in of arrangements. DONALD FORBES, 99, Oakhurst, OCEAN TOWNSHIP, died Monday at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. -He was a carpenter for many years -with Local 2250, Red Bank, retiring 19 years ago.

Mr. Forbes was a member, of Oakhurst United Methodist Moxley Abacus Lodge and was the oldest surviving of the Argyle Sutherland of the Scottish Army. Born in Scotland, he came to the United States in 1927 and lived in Newark before moving to Oakhurst in t952. li; His daughter, Mary Forbes, died in .1982. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Hilton Forbes; a son, Donald two grandchildren and one jgreat-grandchild.

Worden-Hoidal Fu- i rid THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES Pulled from a studio mailroom as a teen-ager, Richard Jaeckel became one of Hollywood's most durable character actors, playing soldiers, gangsters, lawmen and astronauts in 54 years before the camera. Mr. Jaeckel, nominated for best supporting actor in 1971 for "Sometimes a Great Notion," died of an undisclosed illness Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital, a spokeswoman said Monday. He was 70. From "The Dirty Dozen" to "Baywatch," the stocky, baby-faced Mr.

Jaeckel was never far from the camera. He was working in the mailroom at 20th Century Fox studios when he won a role as a teen-age Marine in "Guadalcanal Diary" in 1943. After serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1948, he played a young Marine again in "The Sands of Iwo Jima" with John Wayne. As a churlish sergeant in the 1967 movie "The Dirty Dozen," and Wien Funeral Home, Hackensack, is in charge of arrangements. JACK "L0N" ZICCARDI, 76, Deerfield Beach, formerly of CARTERET, died May 14 at Coral Springs Fla.

Medical Center. He was a longshoreman for 40 years. A World War II Army veteran, he was involved in the Normandy invasion and received the European Medal and the Victory Medal. Bora in Newark, he lived in Carteret before moving to Florida 12 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Anna Civ-eta; two sons, Nicholas and Ronald; five daughters, Patricia Heller, Jacqueline Mann, Marilyn Tampa, Torn Ziccardi and Barbara Broderick; two brothers, Ernie and Carmine; two sisters, Fay Lovallo and Marge Napo-rano; and 11 grandchildren.

HARRIET R. CHAPPELLE, 92, TOMS RIVER, died yesterday at Kensington Manor Nursing Home, Toms River. She formerly was a piano teacher and a volunteer at the Pittsburgh YWCA. Mrs. Chappelle was a graduate of Bucknell University School of Music.

Born in Dunmore, she lived in Pittsburgh before moving to Toms River. She was predeceased by her husband, John. TAMMY PLUFF MILLER, 29, Muncie, formerly of Cliffwood, ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP, died yesterday as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident in Muncie. Ms. Miller was a hairdresser. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she lived in Cliffwood before moving to Muncie 10 years ago. Meeks Funeral Home, Muncie, is in charge of arrangements. C0NCHIETTA "CONNIE" ANN NEWMAN, 64, NEPTUNE, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, after a brief illness. She worked at Air Cruisers in Wall Township for 13 years, and worked in the delicatessen department at Food-town in Wall at the time of her illness. Mrs. Newman was a member of Church of the Holy Innocents, Neptune, Hamilton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Neptune Senior Citizens Club, and Meatcutters Union Local 464A, Paterson.

Born in Asbury Park, she lived in Neptune for 42 years. Surviving are a son, Walter E. Newman III, Neptune; a daughter, Mary Lou Schlottfeld, Berkeley Township; a brother, John Mazza, Wall; three sisters, Mary Ann DeLisa, Wall, Rose Marie Pastizzo and Gloria Baker of Cathedral City, and 6 grandchildren. of MATAWAN who died Sunday, is survived by a daughter, Reed Newberry, Greenwich, Conn. She was listed incorrectly Monday in the Asbury Park Press. KATHLEEN TIERNEY SCHETTINO, 49, MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, who died Saturday, is also survived by her mother, Gloria Rice, Hazlet Township. Rice's name was omitted from an obituary yesterday in the Press. Mr.

Jaeckel played one of the few survivors along with stars Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson. He revived the character in the film's made-for-television sequel, "The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission" in 1985. "Sometimes a Great Notion" included an unforgettable scene in THOMAS R. FARRELL, 60, POINT PLEASANT, died Monday at Brick Hospital. He retired in 1994 as director of auditing at Carteret Federal Savings in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township.

Prior to that, he was senior vice president and chief financial officer at First National Bank of Toms River, controller of Central Jersey Bank in Freehold, controller of New York Bank for Savings, audit manager at NatWest Bank in Jersey City, and spent 10 years as an accountant with Peat Marwick Certified Public Accountants in New York City. Mr. Farrell was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts, the N.Y. and NJ. societies of CPAs, and also was a certified fraud examiner.

He was a communicant of St. Martha's Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant, and a 1958 graduate of Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass. Born and raised in Binghamton, N.Y., he moved to Point Pleasant 12 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Judy An-druss Farrell; four sons, Christopher, Fairfield, Michael, Cos Cob, Mark, Greenville, N.C, and Barton, Spring Lake; a daughter, Michele Farrell, Wall Township; a stepdaughter, Leigh Autenrieth, Point Pleasant; and four brothers, Dr. John, Geneva, N.Y., Dr.
