The win gave the Point Pleasant Panthers a 3-0 conference record and left them heavy favorites to win the title. The loss dropped the West 'V' Jfite Long Branch team's tourney record to 1-1-1 ana virtually eliminated them from the race.

Branch's ground attack moved the ball steadily and set up halfback Georg Penn's three-yard touchdown blast through guard after 5:11 of play. Artie Staggs, a terror at his linebacker position all game for Long Branch's rugged defense, missed his first extra point kick try but made up for it on his next opportunity two minutes later.

After Staggs' kickoff, Monmouth quarterback Dave Darlington tried a first down pass play from his own 41-yard line. The Brancher defense bottled up all of the Falcon receivers and hi scrambling for safety, Darlington ran into Long Branch defensive end Marty Edwards. The ball popped out of Darlington's reach, Edwards fell on it. and Long Branch was on its 20-yard line after his team's drive stalled. But the snap from center sailed right over his head and the best he could do was grab it on his own four before being tackled.

Monmouth's Gary Hyde picked up one yard and Randy Jackson swept right end for the remaining three. Darlington passed to end Dave Stalker for the extra poit. Monmouth missed a golden opportunity to score three minutes into the second period. Taking over on their own 45 and using a fake punt pass play from Larry Norman to Tony Williams for 27 yards, the Falcons marched to a first down on fense. Cordani, who hurt his ankle in practice about 10 days ago, is expected to be ready for Southern Regional next week and Williams will be returned to his halfback slot.

"He really came through for us," said head coach Al Saner. "He turned in an exceptionally fine game. He did everything." The senior back also' completed five of 12 passes and starred on defense, intercepting two Shore tosses, including one that nipped a Shore threat before it really got started. The Panthers' top-rated line performed a little below its normal play but still turned in an excellent defensive game to preserve the Patnhers' unscored-upon streak. Class A football victory over Monmouth Regional yesterday did little to make Brancher Coach Ken Schroeck happy.

True the triumph lifted Long Branch back into Class A contention with a 1-1 record (and 2-1 over-all mark) but Schroeck called the game "our worst of the year." "We made too many mistakes for our own good," said Schroeck. "We were doing all kinds of things we shouldn't have and were lucky to get by Monmouth. A couple of little things could have easily turned things around." Much as Schroeck made of Long Branch mistakes, it was a pair of Monmouth miscues that gave the Branchers opportuni-to register both their touch- AT NEW HAVEN selves with penalties, losing 140 yards throughout the game, but were able to capitalize on Shore mistakes when it counted.
