page AA3 www.app.com LOCAL ASBURY PARK PRESS SUNDAY, DEC. 12, 2010 Battle Gene R. Gambale, a lawyer in Palm Desert, was searching the Internet for news stories about one of his cases when his lost father's name appeared on the screen. "One of the first' things that popped up looked like it had something to do with my father," said Gambale, 66. "I had lived my entire life thinking this had been lost forever." Gambale had stumbled across a loose online confederation of families, air history enthusiasts and amateur explorers who still search to bring back the thousands of American service members lost in Asia and the Pacific during the 20th century.

FROM PAGE AA1 If Gene Gambale is there, it is his second grave. Along with the 11 crewmen and members of an Army graves-registration team who died in the crash, there were at least 42 sets of remains that they were bringing back from former Japanese prison camps in Burma. Gambale and the other airmen who died in captivity had gone missing in action twice. Online discovery About six years ago, page," he said. "There's a reluctance on the part of the Indian government to let our expedition go forward." Helen Gambale died in June 2008, there was a search going on" for her husband, Gene R.

Gambale said. Family members found a mid-April 1944 letter she had written to her husband, saying "she knows he's been writing, but they've never received those letters, and complaining the Army must have lost them," Gambale said. Gambale said the families keep working for a recovery mission because of people like his uncle Anthony: "I'd sure as heck love to see something happen during their lifetime." It's the reason why the military's Joint POWMIA Accounting Command is headquartered in Hawaii, Rowe said. "There are about 78,000 service people still missing from World War II," Gambale said.

Gambale's father was a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force, a bombardier with the 9th Bomber Squadron of the 7th Bomber Group, flying B-24 Liberators out of India against Japanese targets in Southeast Asia. On April 5, 1944, he flew as part of a 15-craft formation over Burma. "Two of the planes got shot down," Anthony Gambale said. His brother parachuted from the falling B-24 and was captured. Four days later back in the United States, Gene Gam-bale's wife, Helen, gave birth to their son.

Anthony Gambale followed in his brother's footsteps by enlisting in the Army Air Force but was kept out of combat air crews because of his family's loss. When Gene Gambale's son saw his family history still unfolding, he got involved with digging up reports of the 10-day search effort in 1946 by American and British aircraft. He went to regional meetings the Joint POWMIA Accounting Command holds with families, and then he met with the ambassador for Bangladesh when families thought the C-47 might have gone down there. "We got the news of Clayton's discovery about this time last year. I took it extremely cautiously," Gene R.

Gambale said. But it was convincing, because of Kuhles' discovery of the aircraft serial number, he added. "The key issue now seems to be getting the Indian government and our government on the same In captivity, "He got a bunch of guys together, and they engineered an ill-fated break from the prison in Rangoon," the younger Gene Gambale said. "The word was one of their own guys might have ratted them out whether he did, it to curry favor with the guards, or they just beat it out of him, no one knows." The guards pounded on Gambale and kept him on a diet of rice and water, fellow prisoner and survivor Lou Bishop told the family in Brooklyn after the war. "They had a pact that whoever made it had to go to the other person's family," Gene R.
