INTERCEPTIONS Kir schenbeum 1-37. 1 7 Oassys' By MATTHEW KIRDAHY STAFF WRITER MANCHESTER At the half, it looked as if Manchester had a hold on a bigger, stronger, faster Red Bank Catholic team. That hold was short-lived as the Caseys came away with a 28-13 victory Saturday over their Shore Conference Liberty Division rival. RBC came in with its guns blazing, scoring a touchdown on a 50-yard run by Donald Porzio on its opening drive. But Manchester came back with a drive that was capped by a 1-yard run by Calvin Zawacki, and with a pair of 7s on the scoreboard going into halftime, the Caseys didn't seem like they were ready to run away with this contest.

But the one play that changed everything came with 11:45 left in the fourth quarter. The Caseys led 13-7 and had a sec-ond-and-2 at their 43-yard line. Quarterback Lou Bianchini handed off to Porzio, who got jammed at the line. Porzio didn't go down, though the play seemed dead. There was no whistle, just plenty of screaming coming from both sidelines.

"I thought I was down, but my knees never touched the ground when I rolled over the kid," said Porzio, who broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run on the play. "I heard coach on the sidelines yelling, 'Go, so I just kept going. As you could see, a touchdown, good things came from it." The score put the Caseys up 21-7 after the two-point conversion and sealed Manchester's fate. "I don't want to say that that's the play that ended it," Hawks head coach Rob Paneque said. "I'm proud of my kids.

I think they played very well. I mean, that's one of the top offensive teams in the Shore the Red Bank Catholic's Lou Bianchini looks for running room in the against Manchester. 2nd- RB CATHOLIC 28 MANCHESTER 13 past few years." The Caseys got most of their offensive production on the ground, rushing 37 times for 299 yards. Porzio had 15 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He also intercepted Hawks quarterback Anthony Palmiotto, who had 10 completions for 142 yards.

"We were just playing hard, running to the football, gang tackling," Porzio said. "Everything was done. I thought our whole team played well. Everything was a huge improvement from last week." Last week, the Caseys gave away one at Monmouth 20-14, after defeating Matawan on opening weekend, 47-28. They're now 2-1, while the Hawks drop to 0-2.

The Hawks ran the ball 21 times for 67 yards against the Caseys, most of the yards belonging to Palmiotto, who made his first start this season. Despite chances of a comeback being long gone, Palmiotto energized his crew for a late fourth-quarter drive. The senior connected on a 50-yard pass to Andrew Dunbar, then another for 10. With just a few seconds on the clock he tossed one to Alex Cuesta for a score. However, all was lost at that point and the Caseys earned the win by executing a simple game plan doing what they do best.

"Control the clock, keep our defense off the field, keep their defense on the field and we felt pretty confident about it," Caseys coach Frank Edgerly said. "And after last week, having a tough loss, we knew we had to come out here and establish what we do best and that's run the ball." "We were able to do a little more offensively this week, like throw the ball downfield, audible out of some things. We did pretty well but there's still room for improvement" Shane O'Connor, Point Boro QB in the second half, but not before the sophomore passed for 146 yards and ran for 79 more. "We were able to do a little more offensively this week, like throw the ball downfield, audible out of some things," O'Connor said. "We did pretty well but there's still room for improvement." Following a Red Raider punt on the game's first possession, the Panther offense went right to work.

Warriors hurting after tough loss STAFF REPORT "Licking our wounds" is how New Egypt head coach Tom Farrell described the state of his team after a 17-7 loss to Pope Paul VI. POPE PAUL VI 17 NEW EGYPT 7 "I'm surprised the parents aren't calling DYFS on me now," Farrell said. "They physically beat us up. I can't be more proud of my team right now." After starting the game short three starters and then losing three more to injury before the fourth quarter, the depleted Warriors, trailing 17-0 at halftime, shut out the Eagles in the second half and tacked on a 64-yard touchdown of their own from receiver Davian Clanton in the fourth.

"Our kids learned a bigger lesson than wins and losses," Farrell said. "They learned you just battle no matter what; you just play hard. I'm more proud of this game than any win." O'Connor followed with touchdown runs of 33, 6, and 32 yards, and capped Point Boro's first half with another touchdown pass to Puorro with 1:09 left to put the Panthers up 42-0. Puorro (four catches for 139 yards) has become O'Connor's favorite target, and with a 6-2 frame, great hands, and exceptional leaping ability, why wouldn't he be? "(Puorro's) amazing," O'Connor said.

"It makes it so much easier to have a guy like that who can go get the ball no matter where you throw it." Skylar Engelken added a 10-yard touchdown run in the first half to make it 28-0. In the third quarter, backup quarterback Bobby Alameda put on a show of his own, scoring on touchdown runs of 75 and 36 yards. The Red Raiders struggled to move the ball is the first half plows through the line for short and lost three fumbles, leading to 21 Panther points. On a positive note, Keyport running back J.J. Olini rushed for a game-high 131 yards on 17 carries.

"When you go up against a triple-option offense and you don't do your job, you're finished," Keyport head coach Mike Ciccotelli said. "Our guys weren't in the right spots most of the game and (Point Boro) made us pay." The quarterback position was a concern for Thompson's team coming into the season, but after a 2-0 start and a dazzling performance Saturday, O'Connor turned the position from a question mark into an exclamation point. "I knew (O'Connor) would be a good one," Thompson said. "I didn't think he would click this quickly, but coaches are always conservative. The kid is a gamer." By MATT MAN LEY STAFF WRITER KEYPORT Shane O'Connor is only a sophomore and is just getting used to his role as Point Pleasant Boro High School's starting quarterback.

POINT BORO 56, KEYPORT 14 After holding the promising young signal-caller back in his team's season-opening victory over Mater Dei, Panthers coach Calvin Thompson decided to open up the playbook for O'Connor and the offense. When Thompson broke open the playbook, O'Connor broke open the game. O'Connor threw for two touchdowns and ran for three more, all before halftime, to ignite the Panthers to a 56-14 victory over Keyport Saturday at Keyport High School. Thompson sat O'Connor along with most of his starters 1.
