Mauch was a member of the Professional Business Association of Ocean Township; a member of the Better Business Bureau; and the Ocean Township Co-Op Organization. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of the Shore area, living in Oakhurst for 19 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Carol Ann Pursell; two sons, Christopher E. and Gregory both at home; his mother, Elizabeth Mauch, here; and a sister, Ruth Robertson, Flourtown, Pa. ORTNEY RUFFIN, 80, of Asbury Park, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Farmingdale. Born in Louisburg, N.C., she had lived in Asbury Park since 1930. Surviving are her husband, Norman; a daughter, Virginia Alexander, with whom she lived; a brother, Oliver Lee Spencer, Neptune; two sisters, Aurelia Spencer, Freehold, and Ura Lee Spencer, Louisburg; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He received a plaque in 1969 from the New Jersey Interscholastic Coaches Association for his "outstanding service to the state and the profession." He received the Coach of SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS Nicholas J.

Merli, 65, a retired teacher and track coach, died Sunday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Merli was an Italian and English teacher at Asbury Park High 1977 photo MERLI the Year award in 1977. He received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Scranton, and a master's degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr.

Merli was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534, and the Monmouth County Bowling Association. Mr. Merli was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake; and a communicant and an usher at St.

Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake. Born in Scranton, he lived there before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1950. Surviving are his wife, the former Edith Diggory; two sons, Christopher Swift Water, and Stephen Missoula, three daughters, Susan Minaldi, Wall Township, Donna Dunnett, Southington, and Ann Gilmore, Brick Township; three brothers, Gino Chester and Joseph, and a sister, Emma Antenori, all Pecksville, and six grandchildren. HAYES, 81, of Howell Township, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He owned and operated his own welding business, Squankum Service Center, Howell, for over 30 years, retiring in 1976. Mr. Hayes was a former Republican County Committeeman and a member of the Affiliated Republican Club of Monmouth County. He was a member of Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club, Jackson Township, and the National Rifle Association.

Born in Lakewood, he was a lifelong resident of Howell. His wife, Helen, died in 1978. Surviving is a son, Chester Ocean Township. C.H.T. Clayton Son Funeral Home, Adelphia, Howell Township, is in charge of arrangements.

ANASTASIA R. SHERIDAN, 74, of Hazlet Township, died yesterday at the Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Ha- zlet Township. Mrs. Sheridan was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg.

Born in New York, she lived there until moving to Hazlet in 1975. Surviving are her husband, Thomas a son, Thomas Marlboro Township; a daughter, Patricia Lay, Montana; two brothers, Walter Egan, New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Frank Egan, Clearwater, a sister, Sister Loretta Egan, Mount Loretto, Staten Island; and four grandchildren. Dewey Margie JOSEPH CHARLES FACCAS, 20, of Keansburg, died yesterday at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel Township. He was a 1985 graduate of Keansburg High School and was an electrician for Peter P. Faccas and Sons, Keansburg, since 1985. He was a parishioner of St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg.

Born in Red Bank, Mr. Faccas lived in Keansburg all his life. Surviving are his parents; Peter and four brothers; George Keansburg; Peter Paul Hazlet Township; Matthew Keyport; and Michael at home; five sisters; Giovanna Gallo, Middletown Township; Sadie Cleary, Keansburg; Luisa Anna and Petrina all at home; and several nieces and nephews. He was a bus driver for the Asbury Park-New York Transit Asbury Park, for 15 years, retiring in 1986. Mr. Savino was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Brick for 40 years before recently moving to Wall. Surviving are his wife, Nancy; a son, Frank Brick; four daughters, Leslie Berg, Brick, Toni Fisher, Toms River, Kathy Lowrey, Rumsey, and Laura Savino, Manasquan; a stepson, Christopher Clayton, Point Pleasant; three stepdaughters, Wendi Bosseller, Whiting section of Manchester Township, Cheryl Green, Point Pleasant, and Tracey Clayton, Freehold; and 13 grandchildren.

Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements. PAUL W. SCHERZER 78, of Atlantic Highlands, died yesterday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Mr. Scherzer owned and operated Paul's Tavern, Atlantic Highlands, for 41 years.

He was a member and past president of the Bayshore Tavern Association. Mr. Scherzer was a member of American Legion Post 141 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10071, both Atlantic Highlands; and Bayshore Chapter, Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Keyport Elks Lodge 2030. Born in Tahlhehn, Germany, he came to the United States as a child.

He lived in Boonton before moving to Atlantic Highlands 41 years ago. Surviving is his wife, the former Edith Holmes; a son, Paul Atlantic Highlands; two daughters, Linda Joslin, Middletown Township, and Nancy Annunziata, Atlantic Highlands; a sister, Elsie Sitzman, Toms River; and eight grandchildren. Posten's Funeral Home, Atlantic Highlands, is in charge of arrangements. IRENE S. DEHM, 60, of Holmdel Township, a registered nurse, died Saturday at home.

Mrs. Dehm had been a nurse for 33 years and for the past 10 years was employed at Holmdel Convalescent Center, Holmdel. She was a communicant of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Her husband, William died in 1981.

Born in Taylor, Mrs. Dehm moved to Holmdel in 1956. Surviving are two sons, Kurt Hawaii and Karl Newark; two daughters, Karen I. and Kathryn both at home; two brothers, Walter Skula, Taylor, and Joseph Skula, Plainfield; and three sisters, Anne Contos, Miramar, Mary Skula and Olga Cantalupo, both of West Orange. Mehlenbeck Funeral Home, Hazlet Township, is in charge of arrangements. HENRY J. BANKS 62, of Freehold, died Sunday at the Freehold Area Hospital, Freehold Township. Mr. Banks was a supervisor for Peekay Abrasives Verona, for 22 years, retiring in 1986.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and served with the Army Air Corps after the war. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Newark. Born in Madison Township, now Old Bridge Township, he lived in Freehold and Newark, returning to Freehold a year ago. Surviving are two sons, Henry Jr. and David, both Freehold; two daughters, Birdena Brookins, Glassboro, and Lalecia Banks, Montclair, Calif; two brothers, John Banks, Asbury Park, and Frank Banks, Freehold; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, is in charge of arrangements. CATHERINE M. FLEMING, 59, of Freehold, died Sunday at home. She worked for S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Holmdel Township, for 43 years.

Miss Fleming was an active member in St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. She was an active member of Silvermead Community Association. Born in Staten Island, she lived there before moving to Freehold in 1976. Surviving are three brothers, John, St.

Louis, James Annandale-onHudson, N.Y., and Thomas, Morganville, Marlboro Township; five nephews; a niece; and a great-nephew. Scalia Funeral Home, Staten Island, is in charge of arrangements. DOMINICK J. NOVEMBRE, 75, of Keansburg, died Sunday at River- view Medical Center, Red Bank. Mr.

Novembre was a bartender for 15 years at the Flamingo Tavern, Keansburg, and retired about four years ago. Before that, he was a truck driver for Sheridan Duncan, New York, for 37 years, when retiring in 1967. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Post 1953, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Keansburg, and local 807, Teamsters Union, Long Island City, N.Y.. Mr. Novembre was a communicant of St.

Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. His son, James, died in 1983 and a son, Peter, died in May. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Anslow; two daughters, Bernadette, Keansburg, and Rosemary Stover, Fair Haven; two brothers, Joseph, Long Island, and James, Hazlet Township; two sisters, Mary Pantagdis, Idaho, and Rose McGowan, Long Island; and 10 grandchildren. OCEAN John C. Curtis, founded company POINT PLEASANT BEACH John C. Curtis, 86, died yesterday at Point Pleasant Hospital. He was the founder of Ship Chandlers a marine supply company which he operated for 50 years. Mr.

Curtis was an Army veteran of World War serving in France with Base Hospital Unit 41. He was a member of Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church. Mr. Curtis was a member of Point Pleasant Beach American Legion, where he was recently awarded a 50- year citation, and a member of Durand Masonic Lodge, Point Pleasant, where he recently received a 50-year membership pin. He was a member of the Point Pleasant Beach Rotary Club; and a charter member of the Shrewsbury and the Barnegat Bay Power Squadrons.

Born in Point Pleasant, he was a lifelong resident here. Surviving are his wife, the former Constance Widner; a son, John C. II, Point Pleasant; a daughter, Constance Ann Perry, Neptune; two sisters, Katherine Badgley, Albuquerque, N.M., Henriette Curtis, Point Pleasant; and five grandchildren. Seville, former collector SHIP BOTTOM Ralph Thomas Seville, 82, a former borough official, died Sunday at Seacrest Village Nursing Home, Little Egg Harbor Township. Mr. Seville was a councilman and a tax collector here many years ago. He worked for 10 years for Almond and Silvermaster Construction Long Beach Township, before retiring many years ago. He was previously employed for many years as a firefighter at Fort Dix and as a bartender.

Born In Quakertown, he lived here since 1928. His wife, Olga, died in 1972. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Tilton, Stafford Township; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, here, is in charge of arrangements. MARGUERITE W.

DECKER, 64, of Bayville, Berkeley Township, died Sunday at Community Memorial Hos- pital, Toms River. Mrs. Decker was a retired secretary for the Berkeley Township Housing Authority. She was a communicant of Barnabas Roman Catholic Church, Bayville, a charter member and treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9503, Berkeley, and a member of the Berkeley Democratic Club. She was born in Roselle and resided in Woodbridge Township before moving to Bayville 32 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph; a son, Joseph Bayville; two daughters, Judith Anne Kaiser and Regina Parks, both Bayville; two sisters, Mary Child, Huntsville, and Julia Gicking, Yardley, and eight grandchildren. O'Connell's Home for Funerals, Bayville, is in charge of arrangements. CATHERINE BONARIA, 87, of Point Pleasant Beach, died yesterday at Point Pleasant Hospital. Born in New York, she lived in Union City before moving to Point Pleasant Beach in 1977. Surviving are a sister, Christina DeBenedictis; and several nephews and nieces.

Shore Memorial Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach, is in charge of arrangements. BETTY MC GILLICK, 85, of Beachwood, died Sunday at Community Memorial Hospital, Toms River. Born in Hawthorne, she spent most of her life in Bergen County, moving to Beachwood 14 years ago. Surviving are her husband, William two sons, William Brick Township, and Robert; a daughter, Charlotte Naylor, both Berkeley Township; seven grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. FRANK J. KILBURG, 87, of Toms River, died Saturday at home. He was a machinist for Singer Manufacturing Elizabeth, for 35 years, retiring in 1965. Mr. Kilburg was a former member of the Hungarian German Association, Elizabeth; and a former committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 11, Elizabeth.

He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, Brick Township. Born in Hungary, he lived in Elizabeth and Cranford Township before moving to Toms River 20 years ago. Surviving is his wife, the former Adele Reimer; a son, Richard, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Adeline Schlenker, Kenilworth; a brother, Peter, Stuart, a sister, Kate Korsch, Cranford; four grandchildren; and three great Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Dover Township, is in charge of arrangements. HARRY A. HOLT, 89, of Ship Bot- tom, died Sunday at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Stafford Township.

He owned and operated Holt's Amoco Station in Ship Bottom for 21 years retiring in 1973. Mr. Holt was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and served in the cavalry during World War I. Born in Philadelphia, he lived in Camden before moving to Ship Bottom 38 years ago. His wife, Sara, died in 1979.

Surviving are two sons, David, Ship Bottom and Harry California; a stepson Clarke Arnold, California; two daughters, Laura L. Bianco, Stafford Township and Sally, Ship Bottom; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral Home, Ship Bottom, is in charge of arrangements. MICHAEL C. COMAR, 57, of Lakewood, died Sunday at Community Memorial Hospital, Toms River.

Born in Red Bank, he moved to Lakewood 45 years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Louise Schultz; a son, Michael Old Bridge Township; a stepson, William Titus, Englishtown; three brothers, Jack, Westfield, Raymond and Paul, both Florida; two sisters, Delores, Point Pleasant, and Audrey, Keyport; and a grandchild. Born in Germany, she lived in Irvington and Newark before moving to Toms River 20 years ago. Her husband, Walter, died in 1979. Hutton, 68, a former police chief in Union Beach, N.J., died Saturday at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Bay Pine. He joined the police force in Union Beach and worked his way through the ranks to become chief in the 1960s. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, he had been decorated several times for valor. During service in the Korean War he photo was awarded the HUTTON Silver Star Medal.

Mr. Hutton was imprisoned for nearly three years during the Korean War. During the Korean War he was reported missing and presumed dead while he had actually been taken prisoner by Red Chinese units. His wife refused to believe reports of his death and enlisted in the WAC's to search for her husband. Mr.

Hutton was released after being imprisoned for 34 months and returned to a "welcome home" celebration in Union Beach. Born in New York, he lived in Union Beach all his life before moving to New Port Richey two years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Jacqueline Williams; a son, Capt. Fordham Germany; three sisters, Mildred Gunsauls, Union Beach, Margaret, Union Beach, and Laverne. Thomas B.

MADELINE HORNER SMITH, 89, of El Cajon, a former resident of Spring Lake Heights, and the West Belmar section of Wall Township for many years, died July 8 at the home of her son, Raymond R. Horner, Spring Valley, Calif. Also surviving are a son, Donald F. Horner; and two grandchildren, all of Manasquan.

Services were held July 11 in Spring Valley, Calif. Nathan Perlmutter, human rights leader The Associated Press 31 regional offices, in Detroit, Miami and New York. In 1965, he left to become associate national director of the American Jewish Committee, and in 1969 he became a vice president of Brandeis University. In 1973, he returned to the AntiDefamation League, where he remained until his death. The ADL, founded in 1913, is dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism and racism.

Perlmutter was diagnosed as having lung cancer in June 1985. That NEW YORK Nathan Perlmutter, national director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith since 1979, has died of cancer, the league announced Monday. He was 64. Perlmutter, who spent nearly his entire career with the human rights organization, died at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Hospital in Manhattan on Sunday, according to the announcement. He had been battling lung cancer since 1985.

Last month, Perlmutter received the Presidential 1 Medal of Freedom, PERLMUTTER the nation's highest civilian award. "He is a hero indeed," President Reagan said in bestowing it, "a hero of the human spirit." A wiry, intense man who expressed himself bluntly, Perlmutter was born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He joined the ADL in Denver in 1949 after finishing law school, and went on to serve as director of three of the agency's November, The New York Times Magazine published "Diary of a Cancer Patient," his reflections on his fight against the disease.
