The executions, the 82nd and 83rd in the nation since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, came a little more than a day after Virginia electrocuted a man who murdered a neighbor.

In Texas, a poisonous solution was injected into John R. The U.S. Supreme Court late yesterday refused stay the death sentences of both men and governors of both states refused to grant last-minute stays. Earlier Tuesday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted against recommending a reprieve for Thompson, who was convicted of murder in the shooting death of Mary Kneupper, 70, of San Antonio during a 1977 robbery.

Thompson, who has said the shooting was accidental, would be the 25th Texas inmate executed more than any other state since Texas resumed the death penalty in 1982. He faced execution before dawn Wednesday. In Parchman, Evans waited through the night a few feet from the gas chamber. He had admitted fatally shooting a Jackson convenience store clerk in 1981. Trial begins in lawsuit over book on 3 murders The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Jury selection began yesterday in convicted murderer Jeffrey MacDonald's $15 million breach-of-contract suit against the author who told his story in "Fatal Vision" and concluded that MacDonald was guilty.

MacDonald claims in his lawsuit that he had a contract with Joe McGinniss in which the author was allowed to hear McDonald's intimate thoughts to write a positive account of the former Green Beret captain's long fight against murder charges. MacDonald, 43, a physician, maintains that he is innocent of murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters at their Fort Bragg, N.C., base home in 1970. Heated arguments on whether to allow MacDonald to tell jurors he still maintains his innocence delayed jury selection until late yesterday afternoon. "We will be forced to offer a complete retrial of the criminal case, which has already been affirmed," said McGinniss' lawyer, Daniel Kornstein. "That issue is closed in the eyes of the law.

His complaint is not about his guilt or innocence." Gary Bostwick, lawyer for MacDonald, said he would only be asking his client for "his own internal assertion it will be limited to just one question." U.S. District Judge William Rea told Kornstein said the criminal case would not be entered and ordered Bostwick not to ask MacDonald the question "until I know more about the case." MacDonald, a federal prisoner, was taken into and out of the courtroom in handcuffs. He is paying the federal government about $300 a day for his stay at Terminal Island federal prison, officials said. MacDonald was convicted of killing his wife, Collette, and their daughters. He claims they were slain by hippie intruders chanting "acid IS groovy, kill the pigs." South Korean students plan 'people's funeral' The Associated Press about 2,000 students marched SEOUL, South Korea Antigovernment students said yesterday they will hold a "people's funeral" and cross-country procession for a dead comrade despite pleas from the family and politicians to avoid provoking more unrest.

President Chun Doo-hwan said he was returning letters of resignation from members of the governing party's executive council, indicating the leadership shakeup expected by political observers will not take place. Student Han-yul was hit in the head by fragments of a tear gas canister June a battle with riot police at Yonsei University and died Sunday. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow and a student committee said the body would be driven afterward to his hometown of Kwangju, 165 miles away. Thousands of students rallied and marched at Yonsei yesterday. About 1,000 riot police looked on, but did not interfere.

After the Yonsei University rally peacefully on the street bordering the campus. They chanted "Down with military dictatorship!" and "America, don't support the dictatorship!" Police took no action. Officers used tear gas Sunday and Monday stop students protesters from leaving the campus for street marches. Leaders of the governing party and opposition urged South Koreans not to let Lee's death inspire more protest. that could halt progress toward reform.

The government is expected grant amnesty tomorrow to about; 2,100 political prisoners, including opposition leader Kim Dae-jung. The amnesty would free Kim from a ban on political activity in effect since his: conviction on sedition charges 1980. Chun agreed to free political pris-1 oners when he acceded on July 1 opposition demands for democratic reforms.
