The dapper sleuth prided himself on being able to follow the twists of the criminal mind, and his 28-year battle of wits with the underworld was the subject of 39 films and a television series plus two best-selling books he wrote himself. Two years ago be came up with a solution to a murder case be had failed to solve 31 years ago.

But since the statute of limitations had long since passed the denouement was saved for a crime writers' meeting. Though feared by London mobsters, he was widely respected, and his sources of information were envied by other detectives. He was awarded the King's Police Medal in 1939 for dismantling a bomb in Piccadilly Circus. He was born in Long Branch and was a lifelong resident of Monmouth County. He had attended Middletown Township High School. Surviving besides his parents, are three brothers, Vincent, Brick Township; Robert, Highlands, and David, Middletown Township; two sisters, Dori, Brick Township, and Klmberly, Middletown Township; his stepmother, Mrs. Vlda Acerra, Atlantic Highlands; a stepbrother, William F. Richmond, Pemberton Township; three stepsisters, Vida, Cindy and Michelle Acerra, Atlantic Highlands, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs.

Mary Wolchak, Middletown Township. The Worden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He also was a vice president and trustee of Southern Ocean County Hospital and past president of the Long Beach Island Rotary Club, past president of the Long Beach Island Board of Trade, a member of the Stafford Recreational Association, and the Southern Regional High School Board of Education.

He was born in Maryland and moved here in 1955. He is survived by bis wife, the former Margaret Carroll; six children, Kathleen, Richard, Joyce, Michael, Mark, and Donna; his mother, Mi. Emma Reynolds; two brothers, Donald, and James, and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Hackney, and Mrs. Grace McNamee.

Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Anna Smith; a son, Thomas East Windsor Township, and a brother, William Lakewood. Frank, 74; In Steamship Business LONG BRANCH Fred B. Frank, 74, of 729 Woodgate who was active in the steamship business over 50 years, died yesterday in Monmouth Medical Center. He was employed by the Clyde San Domingo Line from 1920 to 1923; he was then with the Funch Edye Co. Insurance Steamship Agents from 1923 to 1968 in all phases of steamship business as manager, vice president and director. He retired in 1968.

He then Joined Texas Transport and Terminal Co. Inc. in 1968 as manager and was with them until 1974 when he Joined Til-ston Roberts Corp. as manager. He retired due to illness in 1975.

During World War he served as a commissioned officer mostly in charge of the loading of explosives and military equipment destined for various theaters of operation. He was a member of the Foreign Commerce Club of New York for over 40 years and was a member of the White Hall Lunch Club for over 30 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary L. Duane Cullen; a daughter, Mrs. Clare Cul-len Eagan, Fanwood; a brother, Roy Frank, Bayonne, and three grandchildren.
