He was a charter member of the Bayshore Council of the Knights of Columbus, Keansburg. He traveled extensively throughout the world and was an avid cook, sailor and woodworker. Born in Manhattan, he lived in the Bronx and Keansburg before moving to Middletown in 1953. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas A. and Julia Finn Costello, both born in Ballinasloe, Ireland; his daughter, Karen A.

Costello, who died in 1981; his brother, Thomas; and sister, Marjory Reynolds. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Marian E. Becker Costello; two sons, Raymond D. Brick, and Kenneth Long Branch; two daughters, Maureen D. Dupree, Rumson, and Claudette S.

KATHRYN BEHRENS RUNGE. 85, of FREEHOLD, died Wednesday at Applewood Estates, Freehold. She was a 1932 graduate of the DearbornMorgan School in Orange. She was a homemaker, a community volunteer and a member of the Congregational Church, Manhasset, N.Y., the First Presbyterian Church, Freehold, and the American Association of Retired Persons. Born in Brooklyn, she moved to East Orange as a young child, and raised her family in Roslyn, N.Y., before moving to Applewood Estates nine years ago.

Her husband, Alfred E. died in 1991; and her brother, William Henry Behrens died in 1982. Surviving are her son, Alfred E. Yarmouth, Maine; two daughters, Susan Hoag, Chatham, and Jane Sanger, Wilton, her sister, Dorothy Behrens Shannon, Richland, five grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Somerset Hills Cemetery, Basking Ridge.

SYLVIA SHERTZER, 84, of Hollywood, Fla, formerly of BRADLEY BEACH, died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She was an accomplished watercolorist and piano teacher. She and her late husband, Irving, founded Future House at Jersey Shore Medical Center.

She was a member of the Shore Chapter of Deborah, and with her late husband, was selected as Man and Woman of the Year by Deborah 1983. Born in Newark, she lived in Bradley Beach before moving to Florida. 10 years ago. Her husband, Irving, died in 1992; and her daughter, Carole Littenberg, died in 1997. Surviving are her son, Sidney, Neptune; her daughter, Lois S.

Surry, Colonial Terrace, Ocean Township; her brother, Solomon Torine, Jensen Beach, six grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. ANNA AMABILE TRENTA, 88, of ASBURY PARK, died Wednesday at home.

She was a communicant of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. She was a former communicant of the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Jersey City, a former member of the Children of Anita Hoffman, radical's ex-wife SAN FRANCISCO Anita Hoffman, who helped then-husband Abbie Hoffman plot the most memorable pranks of the Yippie movement and later helped him hide for years from the FBI, died of breast cancer Sunday. She was 56. Ms. Hoffinan helped Abbie disrupt the New York Stock Exchange by throwi money on the trading floor, encircle the 1971 photo Pentagon in a protest against the Vietnam War and plan the demonstrations in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

In one of her most audacious moves, she went to Algeria to meet with Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver and try to forge a coalition between the Panthers and the Yippies. Though they eventually divorced, Ms. Hoffman may be most remembered for how she supported Hoffman for years while he lived underground to escape drug charges. After he went underground in 1974, she raised their son, America, while keeping law enforcement at bay. Her husband committed suicide in 1989.

Ms. Hoffman also was a free. lance writer and novelist. She wrote a memoir of those years, "To America with Love: Letters from the Underground," and later, under a pseudonym, wrote the novel The Associated Press sister, Della Rosenberg, Florida; and two grandchildren, Eric and Jessica Cotenoff. Funeral services will be at at 1 p.m.

She was a bookkeeper, retiring five years ago. She was an avid bowler. Born in Jersey City, she lived in North Bergen and Staten Island before moving to Middletown 15 years ago. Her brother, William DeMola, died in 1984, and her sister, May Ippolito, died in 1970. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Charlotte DeMola, Bradley Beach; four nephews, Gary Ippolito, Staten Island, William DeMola, Neptune, Steven DeMola, Old Bridge, and David DeMola, Toms River; four nieces, Angela and her husband, William Swan, Clifton, Ann Wiener, Neptune, Kathleen Perez, Jackson, and Donna Minniti, Long Branch; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and her friend, Evelyn DePalma, Mountainside.

Born in Teaneck, he lived in Howell and in Montvale before moving to Spring Lake. Surviving are a daughter, Shannon, and a son, Patrick, both Howell; his mother, Kay Driscoll, Fort Lauderdale Lakes, a sister, Catherine D. Buchakian, East Hampton, N.Y.; a brother, Gerald Driscoll, Davie, two nieces, Carolyn Wallace and Katie Driscoll; and a nephew, Sean Driscoll.

SAMUEL M. MIRIZIO, 72, of TINTON FALLS, died Wednesday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was an engineer employed by NJ Transit for 35 years, retiring 11 years ago. He was a parishioner of St. Jerome's Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch.

Mr. Mirizio was a Navy veteran, past exalted ruler Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 742, Long Branch, and a member of the Social Civic Club, East Orange. Born in East Orange, he lived in West Long Branch before moving to Tinton Falls for 13 years ago. His brother, Frank Mirizio, died in 1996. Surviving his wife, Anna Montalbano Mirizio; two sons, Frank Mirizio, Parsippany, and Vincent Mirizio, Tinton Falls; two daughters, Anna Marie Esposito, Parsippany, and Michelle Melillo, Tinton Falls; two brothers, Phillip Mirizio, Toms River, and Vincent Mirizio, Arizona; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Mary Society and the Rosary Society of Holy Rosary Church, and a former member of the PTA, Bradley Beach. She volunteered at the Salvation Army and was a floor representative and volunteer at the Asbury Towers. Born in Italy, she came to the United States as an infant, living in Jersey City before moving to the Shore area in 1942. Her husband, Louis died in 1961. Surviving are a daughter, Anna T.

VALENTIN 75, of MARLBORO, died Wednesday at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a graduate of the New Jersey College of Engineering, now New Jersey Institute of Technology, with a bachelor of arts and a professional engineering degree. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Monmouth Chapter since 1962 and was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was also a mechanical engineer for Worthington Pump Harrison, for 42 years, retiring in 1987. Born in Chicago, he resided i in Morristown before moving to Marlboro 18 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Newhouse Valentin. Private funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, 344 Route 9 north, Manalapan. ARTHUR J. WEIMER 70, of ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, died Wednesday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was a safety engineer for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 34 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the Community Fire Company, Leona 0 Middletown; the Leonardo First Aid Squad; a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 97; an active member of the Right to Life, Red Bank; as well as many other community organizations. He was also a communicant of both St. Agnes Church and Central Baptist Church, both of Atlantic Highlands. Born in the Bronx, he lived there before moving to Leonardo in 1953. His wife, Ethel, died in 1991.

Surviving are seven sons, Arthur J. Dr. William and Thomas, all of Atlantic Highlands, James, Gerald and Timothy, all of Middletown, and Michael, Modesto, five daughters, Ethel Kozlik, Matawan, Kathleen Failie, Easton, Barbette Elder, Bushkill, Deborah Bryson, Clifton, and Sarah Jane Hickey, Colts Neck; and 26 grandchildren.
