ASIURY PARK SUNDAY PRESS 3 Sep. 24, 1967 Ocean Trips Freehold on Late Scores Jackson's Earns 7-7 Closing Drive Tie With Shore Shore territory in 13 plays Including nine which led to their score. 5 tt 9 I at I UCLA Mauls Pitt, 40-8 On Ground PITTSBURGH (AP) Greg Jones hammered out 160 yards as UCLA, repeatedly given good field position by its swift defenders, relied on a savage ground game to crush outclassed Pitt 40-8 Saturday. The sixth-ranked Bruins didn't have to drive more than 55 yards for a touchdown while piling up a 30-0 lead before Pitt crossed midfield for the first time in the third quarter. Jones, a sophomore who replaced All-America Mel Farr, made the most impressive debut by any UCLA back in history last week, gaining 135 yards against Tennessee.

His yardage against the Panthers came on 19 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown sprint. Quarterback Gary Beban climaxed two drives by running over himself for scores before retiring with a 24-0 lead and nine minutes left in the third quarter. Beban came back into the game in the final three minutes after substitute quarterback Bill Bolden was injured. 4 et OCEAN' TOWNSHIP Two fourth-quarter touchdowns, the game's only fumble and last-minute interception gave the Ocean Township High School Spartans a 19-14 come-from-be-hind victory over Freehold Regional in an independent foot-ball game yesterday. It was anybody's game right to the final second when time ran out with the Freehold Colonials on the Spartan 18.

Ocean overcame a 12-7 deficit in the final period with touchdowns by Matthew Tomo and John Villapiano and then preserved its lead when James Henneberry intercepted a Freehold pass on the one-foot line with just over a minute left to play. Spartan Coach Jack Tighe taking no chances on a blocked kick ordered quarterback Brian Fitzgerald to give Freehold a safety after three quarterback sneaks used up 25 seconds but gained only four yards. "It was one of those things," said Tighe. "We won so I guess you can say it worked. If we lost, they would have ridden me out of town on a rail." The safety cut Ocean's lead to five points but gave the winners what should have been a "safe" kickoff from its 20.

The plan almost backfired, however, when a bad kick gave Freehold the ball on the Ocean 33. The Colonials had time for only one play a 15-yard pass from quarterback Pete Hansen to Arnie Bazat before the FRFFHOI.D RF.0. (Ml Ends Willy. Wasko. Hurt.

Tomor who got the touchdown by bucking over from the one did most of the work on drive, carrying six times. But it was Fitzgerald who set up the score with a 40-yard bootleg play to the Colonial one-yard line. The Freehold offense came alive in the second period, and took over the lead with two quick touchdowns. Bazat, beginning an afternoon of aerial acrobatics, scored the first on a 35-yard pass from Hansen. The fleet halfback outdistanced two defenders and then made a leaping catch just short of the goal line.

Tom Wasko, an end, scored the Colonials's last touchdown on a five-yard pass into the flat after Bazat had set up the score with an amazing catch on the play before. On that play, Bazat jumped between two Spartan defenders to snare a Hansen pass with one hand on the Ocean 5. The play covered 37 yards. Kleva had high praise fnr Long Branch Coach Ken Schroeck, and his team. "They're a precision outfit a real credit to Schroeck they outplayed us most of the game," he said. "They're outstanding on defense and I think they're going to beat a lot of teams this year." he added. As for his own club "It took a Middletown team with a lot of heart to in this one." Kleva had high praise for I Rochelle. "He needed a win under his belt he's got the i confidence now I think it will help a lot." Singled out for additional praise were Goodman, middle guard Richard RuofF, Hargraves, tackles Ken King and Dave Seigfried, and McCray, Schroeck's young quarterback Penta ran the option well and expertly utilized the explosive running of backs Glen Covin and Penn.

Covin was especially impressive through the middle. Clearly the outstanding Long Branch player was fullback Staggs. There was seldom a tackle made in the line that he didn't either make alone or get in on. Center Pete Wer-singer and tackle Ron Bisti also played a good game. The Hurricanes, ranked eighth nationally, were caught flat-footed after having put on a desperate rallying drive to take the lead 7-6 with lets than 10 minutes to play. WEST LONG BRANCH -Short Regional and Jackson Township high schools started their Shore Conference Class football season with a 7-7 yesterday.

Shore's Blue Devils started teh game with a strong ground attack in the first quarter but took to the air unsuccessfully in the second quarter. The first Shore score came in the closing seconds of the first auarter when Barry Ashley drove in from the one. David Bo-ard's kick for the extra point was good.
