The heavt Friday night in front of 6,638 fans beat his own record of 70-9Vj set earlier this year on the the International Track Association tour. "I was antsy tonight. I haven't practiced in a week. I think when my form is together I can throw 73 or 74 feet.

My best series before was about 68-9 average. This is by far my best, but I can do a lot better," Oldfield said. Palm Peter Scores hi Frank Pace FREEHOLD Palm Peter, owned-trained-driven by 63-vear-old Edward P. Saba-tini of Freehold, captured the $10,000 Martin S. Frank Pace at Freehold Raceway yesterday.

A crowd of 9,512, largest of the meeting, installed the New Jersey-bred Palm Peter the 19-10 choice and saw the son of Burns Hanover win by a length. Breaking from the outside No. 7 post (Rusty Coast vvas a late scratch), Palm Peter reversed his usual front-running tactics and came from off the pace. Our Prize closed ground to take second money and Bayshore Duke saved ground along the rail to be third in a photo. show yesterday.

Nicklaus, easily the dominant figure in the game today, posted a 199 total "or 54 holes, 17- under-par on the hilly, yard Atlanta Country Club course. Nicklaus, seeking a fourth title of the season and second in as many starts, owned a bulging, six-stroke lead over Tom Welskopf going into today's final round in the chase for the $30,000 first prize, and appeared an almost certain winner. His leading margin, was by two strokes, the largest 54-hole advantage on the pro jjolf tour this year and left the rest of the field admittedly thinking of the second prize. "The rest of us are just playing for second place," said veteran Gay Brewer. "It's just kind of discouraging," said former champion Al Geiberger.

Nicklaus, who hadn't competed since winning the Tournament of Champions April 22. has led or shared the lead all the way in this event. He held a four-stroke advantage when play started on the mild, occasionally, cloudy day and quickly stretched it out. He played the front nine in a brilliant 31 five-under-par and coasted home in 35. For the second day in a row; he got away without making a bogey.

Weiskopf fashioned a four-under-par 68 he lost two strokes to Nicklaus with that good round and was alone in second at 205. The slender Geiberger also had a 68 and was in third at 207. Brewer, with a 65, and Hubert Green, with a 70, followed at 208, nine strokes off the pace. South African Gary Player enjoyed his best round of the tournament, a 69, but was far back in the field with a 216. Masters champion Tommy Aaron failed to qualify for the last 36 holes, while leading money winner Bruce Crampton, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer are not competing.

Although all but out of it, Weiskopf continued to insist "he's human. He can be beaten. "If you don't believe you can win, you're never going to win. I've got to look at it that way. "If I shoot 64 in the last round and he's 72, where does that leave us? "I've shot 64 before and he's had 72 but doesn't look right now." Nicklaus opened with a rush, taking birdies on three of his first five holes.

He made it from 12 feet on the first hole, punched a seven iron to within four feet on" the fourth and rolled in an 18-footer on the next one. Nicklaus just missed on a 30- foot eagle putt on the par-five eighth, leaving it about a half inch short. A six-iron shot to four feet on the ninth provided his fifth birdie on the front South TEAM tCOREl Woodbury 48, 2 vvilliaimtown 31, 1. Woodstown Jl'i: 4. Huiinyia J.
