Hernandez ASBURY PARK The bombshell that hit the campus of the University of Virginia yesterday the news that head football Coach Bill Elias had been hired by Navy, left a wake of shock last night.

The secret that Elias was even negotiating with officials at Annapolis was the best-kept of the coaching changes that follow every football season. The news hit Charlottesville, as a complete surprise. Bob Davis of Neptune, N.J., the quarterback many feel will go on to All-America honors, told the Astoury Park Press by phone last night he didn't hear the news until "three or four o'clock." He said there had been "no rumors or talk about the campus of anything like this." "It shocked me. I don't know what to think," Davis said. "I haven't had time to talk It over with any of the fellows because no one I saw today even knew it.

I don't want to ins anything until I have a getting ready for two today and must prepare for two more the following day. "I talked to Coach Elias last Friday," Davis said, "and there was nothing to even suggest he was going. We talked aBout the team and recruiting and things like that, but he never said anything to make you think he wouldn't be here next year. "I don't know what to think. It will be Interesting to see who the new coach will be whether Coach (George) Blackburn will move up or they'll bring in someone else." Blackburn, assistant to Elias, Is probably the coach on the Virginia staff closest to Davis, since he was the offensive coach and had a direct hand in the development of the former Nep tune High School star as potential All-America material.
