YOV'RE THE SKIPPER jBy John Bohannan Nick Merli Was Star Back, Track Sprinter I I 1 MolbQD i I 5 Mobil heat SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS -Nick Merli, Asbury Park High School's genial track coach, was one of many talented athletes to come out of the Scranton, section in the pre-World War II era. Merli was born in Scranton but graduated from little Blakely High School, a suburb of Scranton, in 1940.

Merli earned six letters, three each in football and track. Blakely was such a small high school that it did not support a basketball team. Despite the lack of boys, Blakely is annually a football power in northeast Pennsylvania. Blakely lost only one game in the three seasons that Merli placed halfback. Blakely rolled up a scoring record in 1938 then it won the Northeast Pennsylvania championship.

Merli accounted for 62 of the record total of 307 points that campaign. Merli, 5-8, weighed 137 pounds, but he was exceptionally swift. In addition to being the team's breakaway runner, Merli handled some of the punting. Merli's coach, John Henzes, is still turn- FUEL OIL Time to Check Your Lines A boat's life doesn't hang by a single thread, but often it depends, on the individual fibers in the yams and strands of your dock or anchor lines. How much does your boat weigh 500 pounds? Or perhaps 1,000 pounds, or several tons? Now, consider this weight in motion, a surging force propelled by the waves of a storm or even the wake of a passing craft.

It's important that your lines hold! When new, good quality manila line has a breaking strength of 1,350 pounds in the three-eighths size, 2.650 in the half-inch, and 4,400 pounds for the five-eighths. But with the commonly-accepted safety margin of five-to-one, the regular load limit for three-eighths comes down to 270 pounds, the half-inch 530 pounds, and the five-eighths 880 pounds. Right now is a good time to check your lines and see if they show evidence of retaining enough strength to keep your boat from piling up on the rocks. New rope has been treated by the manufacturer with an oily substance to lubricate the internal fibers and to retain the natural oil of the manila itself. As long as this oil is retained, the rope remains springy and strong.

Causes of Rope Deterioration But the alternate wetting and drying of boat lines has a tendency to dry out the rope until the fibers become brittle and break easily. The line then has a limp, dead characteristic. Other causes of deterioration are internal abrasion from mud and sand, external chafe from sharp post corners, rails, poorly-designed checks, undersized blocks and slipping on winches; also battery acid burns, and rot caused from stowing the line wet in hot, poorly ventilated lockers. First check your line for external wear. Look for dark spots where it has been chafing, broken fibers, yarns, or strands.

And the nostalgia for the good old days must be carried to foolhardy extremes. Merli won the 60-yard indoor sprint championship and the 100-yard outdoor championship of northeastern Pennsylvania. Merli also was a consistent point winner in the pole vault at 10-6. Merli received an athletic scholarship to Scranton University based upon his fabulous high school record.

He was a member of Scranton's varsity 11 for three years a quarterback. Nick, who weighed 148 pounds, was the smallest member of Coach Pete Carlesimo's varsity 11. 3 Years in Army After three years at Scranton, Nick enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was discharged in 1946 after attaining the rank of sergeant. Merli was an interpreter for the Italian prisoners at Ft. Dix.

Merli returned to Scranton and graduated in 1947. Nick played years of soft-ball in the Mid-Valley Softball League. Merli, a speedy flychaser, was noted for being a good hunter. Merli received his master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in history but now teaches Italian and English at Asbury Park High School. During his 10-year tenure at Asbury Park High School, Nick coached freshman football for sev en years, assisted Gus Villapiano in track for three years, and has been the head track coach for the past five years.

Nick has men-tored the indoor track squad for eight years and has been the bowling coach for two years. Top Bowler Merli rates as one of the top bowlers at the Shore with an average of 185 for the last two years in the Monmouth County Teachers' League, which he helped organize, and served as president until this year. In addition to being the high average roller of the Teachers League, Nick's 189 average was-the second highest in the Asbury Park Businessman's League. Some of the track champions whom Merli developed were Frank Budd, Karl Mayer, Steve Scheck, Charlie Smith Dave Ta-born, Jack Duval, and Bob Bunting. Nick resides here with his wife, the former Edith Diggory, of Philadelphia, and four children Chris, Susan, Steve, 3Vi, and Donna, 2.

Questions and Answers Is nylon line worth the money? Nylon line costs almost four times as much as manila, but it is more than twice as strong and weighs less than three quarters as much. It can be stowed wet without danger of rot to the line, and eppears to last almost indefinitely if guarded from unnecessary chafing and abrasion. Its flexibility is a good feature for dock, moor-ine and anchor line but it stretches too much to be used for halyards. 6 What material do you consider best for sheets? In the first place, duck hunting is a sport hallowed by the centuries, cloaked and muffled in generations of rich tradition. The youngster must not get the idea that it always was all as simple as, for Instance, astrophysics, of interplanetary travel And invention must be equal to a collision with hard facts, for every duck hunter it entitled to know a few things that aren't strictly true. The elder statesman whose children already are convinced that he walked six miles to school through four feet of snow, summer and winter, has a considerable advantage. He can easily switch to tales of how the ice was always six inches thick where he wanted to pole the boat or plant the decoys. Can Be Overdone You can overdo this, however.

A generation ago, the current expert's boyish suspicions about his elder's hard times were aroused and never thereafter allayed by stories of a long-ago duck season that was so cold only polar bears could be trained as hot soup and the hand-warmer. Spin your harrowing tale of how you, as a youth, poled your skiff eight miles before dawn against a 10-mile current to reach the blind. But first be sure the model outboard motor is working. And finally here's the touch of master liars of the Old Duck Hunters' Assn. give the properly humbled novice something to be proud of in his own time.

Pistols The series suffered a major interruption after the 1902 game when sword-wielding Clemson students and pistol-carrying university men lined up for battle after a university win. The late Christie Benet, then an assistant university coach, later a U.S. senator, scrambled atop a wall and challenged the Clemsons to individual combat. There were no takers and that ended a possibly serious free-for-all. It also ended the series for six years.
