Tarmi RED BANK ASBURY PARK Scanning New Books MY LIFE IN THE MAINE WOODS: A Game Warden's Wife in the Allagash Country. By Annette Jackson. Norton. Allagash country--a river, falls, lake, town--lies vaguely north of Moosehead Lake and Mount Katahdin, stretching almost 1 up to the Quebec line. The author, now living in the town with her husband and four children, spent a couple of decades of her married life in cabins, on the trail, in a canoe.

She was and is afraid of bears, for she's seen them rip off shed roof to reach food, and even rear up on their hind legs to peer into the car in which she huddled with a baby or two. But she doesn't seem to be afraid of anything else. Her husband checked on hunters' licenses--he once came home with a bullet hole in his hat -or did odd jobs. There's a lot about food here: How good are porcupine and deer livers, beaver tail, spruce gum, and so on. In a way this is a woman's book, and in a way, for lack of guile, not a very good book.

But if Mrs. Jackson isn't a natural-born writer, she's a natural-born warden's wife and the honest simplicity of her account is interesting and often touching. RAPTURE IN MY RAGS. By Phyllis Hastings, Dutton. Agnes, oldest child of a farmer's family in isolated English countryside, is left alone with her father after the mother dies the other children leave.

Target of her father's rough tongue and his blows, she takes refuge in the fields, the woods, the weather. Her loneliness becomes overpowering. She decides to make a scarecrow for company out of sawdust, a keg, a pumpkin, cloth, boots, gloves, her father's old She finishes the figure in her room. To this girl who discovers faces and shapes in clouds, who can't tell left from right and right from wrong, who sees with the mind's eye what real eye can never corroborate-to this girl so starved for the love which is enjoyed even by the farmyard beasts, this man in her room seems so real "I was too shy to undress." From the very first sentence, "Some people are afraid of mice, some of burglars, some of ghosts," you are completely intrigued by this story wrought so lovingly and with such stirring magic. The brutal father, the wonderful Scarecrow, and the girl so tender and unforgettable are a cast you cannot match in this season's fiction.

Fantasy is common enough, and so is the fast-paced plot: this first novel weaves them together to provide a remarkably gripping and worthwhile story. AMERICAN WAYS OF LIFE. By George: R. Stewart. Doubleday.

A year ago Stewart was a Fulbright lecturer telling the Greeks what America and Americans are. He has expanded his lectures into this book telling Americans themselves. The intriguing topic is discussed under a dozen headings-1 colonists, language, food, drink, elothing, shelter, sex, the arts and so on. His conclusion is that while environment had its effects, heredity played the more important role. This book is based on a grand idea, and a lot of it is fine skimming, but it sometimes does us less than justice.

THE NIGHTMARE. By C. S. Forster. Little, Brown.

A master story teller, C. S. Forster tries his hand at a series of short horror tales of Nazi Germany. They do not come off well. Perhaps because truth is stranger than fiction, particularly in dealing with the brutalities of concentration camps, the stories seem warmed-over news dispatches.

This is heightened by the fact Forster in his selection used true incidents from the news as the framework for his fictionalized versions. One of the mysteries is why wait almost 10 years after the war to write and publish these. John Hersey did a far more effective and timely job in "The Wall." Both in subject matter and the result it is an off beat performance by the creator of Horatio Hornblower and will be a disappointment to Hornblower fans. THE WHITE SAND OF SHIRAHAMA. By Kenneth Lamott.

Little, Brown. Shirahama, summer resort of missionaries in Japan- this novel says--attracts for one season a couple obviously in need of what missionaries have got. They are Sam and Kate Kirby. Sam is good man but--but a hard drinker, but he'll risk his life to save a drowning boy, but he'll forfeit the praise of the godly with a ringing curse. Another newcomer to the beach, a teacher, Paul Thatcher, falls in love with Ellen, whose defenses are weakened by her husband's sanctimoniousness.

This author's first novel, "The Stockade," won warm discerning critics; it was written out of his wartime experiences. Presumably there's some first-hand observation in this novel, too, for Lamott, a missionary's son, spent his youth in Japan. But for the novelist this experience was nowhere near so fruitful. Make It Yourself COORDINATED SCHOLAR -This little girl wears a play dress to match her illustrated cloth book. Both are easy to make at home with standard patterns.

AP Newsfeatures Newest idea for the toddler set is a matching book and dress set. Four-color transfers do the trick. On the easy-to-make play dress, elephants and kangaroos march two by two around the hem; a kangaroo pocket smack-dab on the tummy carries a picture of Noah's Ark. The same transfers are used to make a little cloth book, with the Ark as cover illustration and the animals two to a page inside. Transfers also are used for the letters of the text, spelling out the name of each animal.

Altho pattern here directions are clear and complete, are some tips from local sewing center experts to make your sewing go faster. Use the gathering foot on your sewing machine to gather in the neckline of the dress and the multi-slotted binder to make quick work of binding all raw edges. To make the book, cut four strips of cloth measuring 6x14 inches, using pinking shears to prevent raveling. White muslin is perfect for the purpose, or you may use four different colors of solid color chambray or percale. Laying the four strips together, Tremaine Becomes Bride re Gulliver in the land of the Lilliputians, Judy Jeninto a huge dollhouse made for her by her grand.

Mirrors Aid Tots To Better Habits Mirrors are an effective "silent disciplinarian" in teaching young children habits of cleanliness, dress and manners, according to June Cabot, Home Arts Council director for Libbey-Owens-Ford. learn first by imitating their parents, and later by repetition and self-criticism, "Miss Cabot said. "Final achievement can be hastened enormously when they are able to observe their own progress and profit from their own mistakes." To encourage tooth brushing and washing, the home expert suggests either a platform step so the child can "reach" the regular bathroom mirror or, if a step would hinder others, a separate mirror at child-height on an adjoining wall. For table manners, Miss Cabot suggests a mirrored backbar at the breakfast counter or mirrored walls in breakfast nook; and for neat dressing, a full-length closet mirror in the child's room.

Phyllis Hastings' "Rapture in My Rags" is her first book to be published in America, but in her native England she is known for a couple of other novels and more than 400 short stories. Born in Bristol and now living in Sussex husband and son, she started out in life as a ballet dancer, first billed as "Baby Phyllis Hastings," then as "Little Phyllis Hastings." She studied in London, and composed some of her own dances, but writing eventually proved more appealing.
