SOCIAL NEWS ASRURY PARK SUNDAY PRESS, Sunday, July 18, 1954 WOMEN'S INTERESTS SEVENTEEN Neckline News for Fall Scanning New Books MY LIFE IS THE MAINE WOODS: A Game Harden Wife Id the Allagash Country. By Annette Jackson. Norton. Allagash country a river, falls, lake, town lies vaguely north of Moosehead Lake and Mount Katahdin, stretching almost up to the Quebec line. The author, now living in the town with her husband and four children, spent a couple of decades of her married life in cabins, on the trail, in a canoe.

She was and is afraid of bears, for she's seen them rip off a shed roof to reach food, and even rear up on their hind legs to peer into the car in which she huddled with a baby or two. But she doesn't seem to be afraid of anything else. Her husband checked on hunters' licenses he once rame home with a bullet hole in his hat or did odd jobs. There's a lot about food here: How good are porcupine and deer livers, beaver tail, spruce gum, and so on. In a way this is a woman's book, and in a way, for lack of guile, not a very good book.

But if Ruth Tremaine Becomes Bride PITTSBURGH, Pa-Miss Ruth McComb Tremaine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil H. Tremaine, here, became the bride of George Frederick Negri, formerly of Loch Arbour, N.J., son of Mrs. Julia Voils, here, at a ceremony performed last evening in the Over brook Presbyterian Church.

The bride, escorted by her father, wore a white nylon tulle over taffeta gown and a fingr tip veil of illusion. She carried a bouquet of white orchids, lilies of the valley, and stephanotis. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church social room. The couple will reside in Prospect Park, after a wedding trip to Canada. The bridegroom is associated with the Lamp Division of West-inghouse Electric Corporation here.

The bride, a local model, is employed by the Potter Bank and Trust Company in this citv. Mrs. Jackson isn't a naturaKborn writer, she's a natural-born warden's to Oil i wife and the honest simplicity of her account is interesting and often touching. iA 1 Jt ntivi nl. DOLL HOUSE COMPLETE WITH TV-Resembling Gulliver in the land of the Lilliputians, Judy Jen-sen, 41 Virginia Avenue, Manasquan, peers into a huge dollhouse made for her by her grand father.

The house was completed for 15-year-old Judy as a Christmas present last December, The elaborate toy has ten rooms and is three feet wide and five feet long. Detailed furnishings include everything from foam rubber cushions to gloss chandeliers. The living room features a hand-made drop leaf table and a television set that has approximately 12 channels. (Various pictures appear on the screen when the knob is turned). Construction on the house amounted to what might be considered a family affair.

Ralph Leverton, Clifton, Judy's grandfather, made the house itself. His wife hung the wallpaper and did most of the sewing. Judy's aunt, Miss Dorothy Leverton, made all the furniture by hand. Judy is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Erick Jensen.

RAPTURE IN MY RAGS. By Phyllis Hastings. Dutton. Agnes, oldest child of a farmer's family in isolated English countryside, is left alone with her father after the mother dies and the other children leave. Target ef her father's rough tongue and his blows, she takes refuge In the fields, the woods, the weather.

Her loneliness becomes overpowering. She decides to make a scarecrow for company out of sawdust, a keg, a pumpkin, cloth, boots, gloves, her father's old suit. She finishes the figure in her room. To this girl who discovers faces and shapes in clouds, who can't tell left from right nd right from wrong, who sees with the mind's eye what the real eye can never corroborate to this girl so starved for the love which is enjoyed even by the farmyard beasts, this man in her room seems so real "I was too shy to undress." From the very first sentence. "Some people are afraid of mice, some of burglars, some of ghosts," you are completely intrigued by this story wrought so lovingly and with such stirring magic.

Tbe brutal father, the wonderful Scarecrow, and the girl so tender and unforgettable are a cast you cannot match in this season'i fiction. Fantasy is common enough, and so is the fast-paced plot: this first novel weaves them together to provide a remarkably gripping and worthwhile story. Little. Brown. A master story teller, C. S. Forster tries his hand at a series of short horror tales of Nazi Germany.

They do not come off well. Perhaps because truth is stranger than fiction, particularly in dealing with the brutalities of concentration camps, the stories seem warmed-over news dispatches. This is heightened by the fact Forster in his selection used true incidents from the news as the framework for his fictionalized versions. One of the mysteries is why wait almost 10 years after the war to write and publish these. John Hersey did a far more effective and timely job in "The Wall."
