Kiss is a hard band to follow but the group gave it all it could and the audience felt the effort.

Their music-was well executed but much more suitable for the New York club circuit. Much of their material borders on the "funk-rock" that is currently being intermingled with the broad-based rock n' roll spectrum. The group has just signed a recording contract so chances are with a little guidance and' some experience it will come, into its ow n. was the featured group on the billing. This English group blends-classical origins of European music with contemporary rock music to form an exciting and free-flowing outgrowth of English rock.

Their musical arrangement was extremely smooth and very stable. Annie Haslam takes care of the singing chores with a voice that covers more than one octave. She does not rely on screaming tactics but rather on a pure and sensitive' approach to the music styles of the band. Bassist Jon Camp and pianist John Tout were equally Impressive as they supplied the basic foundation for group. Most of the songs were very tight and distinctive.

The repititious drab which attacks many rock groups after one or two albums has not struck Renaissance yet. Their style is fresh welcome and stikes in a new musical ASBURY PARK It's concert time once again in Asbury Tark. Last night the Sunshine In opened its 1974 season with a sellout croud and a better-than-average show. Although the freezing rain came down in torrents, the audience warmed to the music. Featured on the billing was Kiss, a glitter rock band from New York City.

Truth, a local band from Taterson, which took the place of the special guest group lOcc (the flu sent them back to England), and Renaissance, another English band with a new and very solid style of its ow n. Glitter rock is rapidly becoming the most sought after rock genre in the music business today. First it was Alice Cooper and David Bowie. Now there is Kiss with its penetrating theatrics, wall-to-wall amps, and its comic facial makeup. The music they play is basic rock n' roll with a definite emphasis on loudness.

They probably could make it as a straight forward rock group but the additional stage show makes the act much more explosive and potent. One of their most rousing numbers, "Firehouse," fea-' clouds of dense smoke, fire engine sirens and red lights revolving above the amps, and flame-throwing flares which exploded on stage at the peak of the per-, formance. All this is done in a professional manner -but it took much of the concentration away from their music. Except for the dreary weather and the fact that luce was not able to perform as scheduled, the Sunshine In got off to a solid start.

The' acoustics and sound system seem much better this year and the show just about started on time. The next-scheduled act is Sha Na Na on May 4.
